New Macbook Pro..

Indeed, people need to move with the times, and Swain it's Apple leading the trend, just like removing the headphone socket off phones, the peripheral companies will actually do some changes now.

Just bought a HP spectre laptop for a mate and that only has USB c too, when I told him he was fine with it, and what are all these devices you're plugging into laptop USB ports all the time to care? Everything is wireless these days, you backup to the cloud, use online file sharing services live onedrive etc.

The only thing I ever plug in is an external hard drive for transporting large files, a dongle is not an issue. I've got the new MacBook, that just has a single USB c on it, do it's not like Apple haven't already been doing this for a couple of years, I can't even charge and plug something in at the same time without a multi dongle, you get used to it and don't even give it a second thought.

We're in a wireless and cloud world, the only cable I use is the power cable (which I admit, I do miss the magnetised cable on my MacBook, plugging into a USB c port is a bit fiddly compared to a magnetised connection)
Yeah, pretty much all this.

It's quite funny on the mac rumours forum with people wondering how anybody could possibly buy one with 256GB of storage, but people just cart around large amounts of redundant data, I have a f**k off synology because that supports my storage needs and archiving much better that a lot of onboard storage would! I still have 40 GB free on my current MBP and that only has a 128 GB ssd!

What's more baffling with this gen is that people are spending the cash upgrading the non removable ssd while not buying Apple care. I wouldn't be touching one of these without apple care simply because the cost of a potential failure.

Pretty much the only things I ever plug into USB are my debuggers and that's hardly ever as I mostly RDP into my office machine.

I backed snapinator on kickstarter for magjack for the new MBP.

I agree with everything but for the removal of SD card slot. All other means of transfer off of SD card are pants.
what about those 452 ports in one card slot things, thats what I've got as it takes everything and seems fast enough?

I've never used the SD card slot on my Macbook Pro, but then my 7D uses compact flash still. Is the wireless transfer from modern cameras not up to speed yet?

Seems to be quite a bit of stock for 13" touchbar models available to pickup in store today.
My 15" shipped sometime overnight, current estimated delivery is a week today.

I'm wanting to just go to Apple and walk out with a touch bar 13". Does anyone know when stores will have stock?

I kinda wish they did the 15" version without touch bar but hey.

Wonder if they'll do any Black Friday deals on this. Think I'll go for the LG 5k display also (though will have to buy before end of year before its price goes back up).

If they do it will probably be a iTunes card or something, they've done that in the past haven't they?

(Btw, just saw you posting over on MR)

I'm going to head to Meadowhall when the traffic dies down.

I found out recently that you can buy apple care at any point in the first 12 months. If i started it on the 11th month, would i get three years from that date effectively having a 4yr (ish) warranty?

Mine is in transit. Was tempted to get one from the store yesterday but there are no us keyboards in stock.

Spanish etc? Main reason for me is I prefer the wider return key than the tall and narrow one on a UK keyboard.

No, you get 2 years added onto the included first year.

US keyboard will have to be bought online as it's not a stock config the UK stores will have (they do have a few different configs).

Mine is with a US keyboard as a UK mac keyboard is horrific for a programmer.

Yeah. I ordered mine on launch day so DHL says by end of day tomorrow. I guess waiting two extra days is nothing really.

I'm gonna try the Apple store in Glasgow tomorrow to see if they have the spec I'm after.
Failing that I'll just order online. Anyone ordered with student discount using a relatives student I'D?

I'm a student myself. You just need to get them to log into their 'uni days' account. If you scroll down to the bottom of the apple website page there is a link saying buy for university. That will take you to the educational store.

I've never had any confirmation requests from Apple. Bought 3 on student discount now. Second was for my housemate, we gave my email when they asked but that can be changed/ doesn't matter for warranty and we paid on his card. (I sold one last week with 2 year warranty and the buyer said he doesn't usually have to do anything with regards to the email if it needs repairing). They only asked me for my email at the end of the sale yesterday for the receipt. (I've always bought in store)

What level of storage did you go for? I tell myself to get the 1TB because why not? But really 512Gb is probably enough. You can get portable 1TB SSDs for less than Apples upgrade price from 512Gb to 1TB giving you an extra 512GB of storage.

I know the SSDs in the new Pros are really fast so would I miss that?

I just went for the 256Gb. Did plan on getting the 512Gb but I wasn't expecting such a price jump from the previous generation. I have a 1TB external drive so I can just use that for films/photos. All my music is Spotify and obviously word etc. uses f**k all. If the 1TB internal is disk not solid then definitely go for the 512GB SSD, SSD is a definite no brainer, they are unbelievably quicker than disk.

I also went for 256. My current MBP has OS X and the apps installed on a 128GB SSD and I still have 40GB free on that.

I do have a second drive in it which houses my home folder, but that basically consists of a couple of VM images for work (one is windows which is 500GB and the other is about 100GB and is ubuntu image which I have set up to build custom Linux OS for our embedded stuff).

I hardly ever use the VM's as I tend to use the machines in the office (I RDP in), they're just on my machine in case.

Got an external drive set up with windows to go which I will use on this, means I'm not filling the drive with stuff that I hardly use!)

Plus, I have a synology ds916+ which runs Plex server and is used for other storage)

New machine has AppleCare as well given that the SSD is not replaceable.

If I didn't have the synology then I'd probably have got more space, but I just don't use it.

You can use the scrub control on the touchbar when playing YouTube videos to skip past adverts! [emoji3]

Ordered mine on Saturday through my friend at Apple on Friends & Family. Went for the non-touch bar model as I can't see the value of it really if you're savvy with keyboard shortcuts.

It's been 7 years since I bought my current MacBook Pro & it's served me very well. Only recently with editing high quality GoPro footage have I seen it start to struggle a little.

Question - I have Office, Photoshop & other programs on my current one which I managed to get for free (ahem) back when I got it 7 years ago. Just looked at the price of Office on Amazon - £100!!! :anguished:. Does anyone have any advice on the best places to get them for free (ahem) at the moment? Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not share here.

Thanks.

I've been able to get Office through my employers discount (past 3 have offered it). Usually about £10 or something. Might be worth asking, assuming you're not self employed.

I did so much swearing at the TV on the unveil... I hated the new MBP. No SD was pretty much the main hate but that price hike to! Still, I went FULL r****d and purchased the top whack, all singing custom build 15" in Space Grey just before Christmas (It came in at £3750ish with discounts) and it's absolutely amazing. My ass hurts still and I'm pretty pissed that it doesn't nosh me off for that cash but the only complaint i've got is the slightly lesser battery life than my Late 2013 13" got.

Screen, Keyboard, Touchbar... brilliant! I'm also losing weight thru carrying all the singles around so that's a bonus!

Here's the MBP alone. Then throw in some Apps and a bag... lets just call it what it was.... STOOOOOPID LoL
