Stealth dashcam install

  172
I've been after a dashcam for about a year due to seeing increasingly bad driving on my drive to work etc.

Never like the idea of a big bulky unit and the faff of sticking it to the windscreen and looking like a dashcamhero.

So decided to try a bit of a stealthy install I can forget about and hopefully I'll never need to call on the footage but if some idiot decides to crash into me it's there should I need it.

I went with the möbius camera as recommended by a few on here. I bought a few extras too:
8 inch lens extension cable
Super capacitor
Hard wire install kit

The total was about £80. Which I think is fair for the size of the unit and quality. Did the install today and I'm prettt happy with it, doesn't stand out at all and just starts recording when the ignition turns on and then goes off shortly after the car is off.

This is the actual camera unit mounted to the screen on the passenger side.

Then the actual lens (thanks to the extension) is ran through the rain cover sensor and then into the unit. Although a bit crude with the tape it works and stays in place.

Nothing really that instrusive from the drivers seat

Nice one.

Personally I like the upfront approach
Clio has one in full view forward facing
Golf has one forward, one rear facing, with stickers front and back stating "Dashcam recording"

Chavs whizz up behind me, then back off to 30 foot or so immediately.
Just the job

I don't want it to stand out purely because I don't want to take it out the car and don't want the local smackheads to put a window through for it. Plus if plod ever pull me for any driving issues (on empty country roads) I shouldn't have anything to worry about incriminating myself haha

Put a window through for (Mine) a £20 cheapo camera. Methinks not, maybe a pricey mobile phone
Incriminating yourself is a fair point- they never noticed mine after a collision, ive still got the footage. But the Old Bill, are the Old Bill, and if the situation is serious enough, they will find a camera whether stealth or not....

Luckily no "smackheads" round my way :)

I've known windows to go through for a few quid in loose change, a dashcam no matter how cheap is a target in my eyes.

As for plod I'm sure they're not interested but if I were to get accused of something I wouldn't want to shoot myself in the foot as I'm sure they can seize it for evidence but they can't seize what they don't know exists!

Hoping to do similar with my dashcam which is a nextbase 421GW. Have the 5v hardwire system to my old cigarette lighter cabling and have just ordered a cable to route it under my headlining and down my a pillars. My brother runs a gopro in his jordan on his top dash, but harrogate isnt exactly crime ridden.

I don't get why people just don't buy the one I bang on about, I can't even see mine from drivers seat.

Instead they'd rather cut up other cameras and bodge it.

Should have looked at the Street Guardian SGZC12RC, the camera itself is tiny!

Not discreet enough for my liking. Mine is hardly bodged, nothing is cut up either... I've combined components sold by the manufacturer to suit my needs. But thanks for the input...

How did you stick the mobius to the windscreen? I tried to install it there but it kept slipping off. Instead I mounted it to the back of the rearview mirror (similarly discreet).

Other advantage of the discreet approach is that it makes a nice trackday cam without having to over-faff with mounts.

I don't get why he's mounted it so far forward in that picture, it's almost a retarded place.

I'm just installing mine now, piggy backed onto ignition fuse in the box under steering wheel.....can't seem to find a ground point anywhere nearby though?

Which one did you use?

I went into the passenger side fuse box then put a bolt through the metal bracket that holds the UCH (I think). There should be plenty of grounds around the column though

The Mobius is such an easy camera to hide.

I literally do not notice it any more. Completely forget it's there.

Is that because of the bus sized steering wheel in the volvo? ;)

Must admit, I always hated that in mine, but thats also coming from a smaller aftermarket wheel too.

It's not far off the size of the wheel in the MX5! But I know what you mean, the OMP Trecento I had in the clio was my one favourite part. Felt like a proper go kart, but something that small would make torque steer a nightmare.

The mobius is a great camera as echo'ed by everyone else, hope you have more luck than me regarding the lens extension, i never got any reliable footage due to a poor ribbon connection into the circuit board.

Been great so far to be honest, not had any problems with the extension! Is your problem the ribbon or the connection in the board?

May also be EMI, I can ruin my picture by putting my phone near to the ribbon!

But yeah normally I get fine pictures using it too.

It was well over a year or more since i tried it but if i remember correctly it was the connection on the ribbon strip itself that was causing the problem. It may well have been interference though aswell. Besides that im happy with how mine is as i cant see it from the drivers seat, i had hoped to do a completely hidden install but due to needing to access the sd/usb and needing to press the save button in the event of an incident that but hold to that idea for the time.
