New Engine - Opportunity for Refresh

Hi Guys,

So after a cambelt related incident, I'm replacing the engine in my 182 with a 172 Ph1 engine. (Mike @ Rentech is doing the work). The car (118k mileage) is used as my daily (10k/year) but also 6/7 track days so I'm looking at anything worthwhile replacing to improve the car whilst the engine is out and it might be cheaper.

Current priorities:
  • All belts, dephaser and water pump will be done
  • Clutch
  • Spark plugs (salvaged from old engine or new)
May do my planned suspension upgrade at the same time:
  • 172 cup shocks
  • Pro-Line Springs
  • Camber bolts + full wheel alignment/camber correction
Any thoughts? Bushes to replace?

I'd do a full suspension refresh whilst you're at it. It's one of those things a lot of people skip for some reason

There pretty much the same engine mate. That ly ad losds of mad cripple help init hence the issue
Ahh okay. Was wondering if there was a specific reason as in my eyes it'd just make sense to shove a 182 engine in if you were going to the lengths of doing belts etc?

Mainly availability. Particularly of a decent mileage. Ph1s are supposedly meant to be a bit quicker too. It will have the 182 manifold etc from my current engine so no discernable difference. I think the main problem was the deception with the one above - "low mileage" when you have no idea of the mileage of the 172 engine slyly swapped into it + all the additional crap. Especially when you think that was 5 yrs ago.

I'd do a full suspension refresh whilst you're at it. It's one of those things a lot of people skip for some reason

Probably the same reason I will - escalating costs! What would be the highest priority to look at?

May as well get new plugs. Just give Mike a budget and ask him to do anything needed haha.

My 182 has a 172 engine in it. You only need to keep the 172 inlet on.

Get the rack bushes changed.
What effect am I likely to notice? I had been considering this as I'd had some slight play in the steering before, possible fix?

It shouldn't feel any different unless there shot now. It's just a horrible job to do with the engine in.

The steering just feels a little vague when there on there way out.

There's not really much to refresh on the engine other than what you already have mentioned, when mine came out the first time I got new parts to refresh the engine bay itself. Coolant bottle, PAS bottle, new hoses, powder coated inlets.

Just get the engine bay cleaned properly, get rid of the old carpet on the fire wall for some nimbus heat shielding.
Change steering rack bushes as said, maybe worth doing the inner track rod ends while the engines out
All depends on your budget thou.. Good luck with it.

With the age of these cars now people are swapping engines. You probably won't see any difference between acceleration. But i suppose putting a low mileage engine in will hold the clios life more than breaking it. Also im the owner of that LY :)

Actually, mine seems to have a noticeable amount more torque at lower revs with the Ph1 engine in. Engine note is noticeably deeper.

Nothing wrong with a car with a bit of history! It looks lovely!

Exhaust ports was what I've read. Mike's comments too.
Improve's driveability a bit (Imo)

The other difference albeit not engine related is phase 1 being cable throttle body and 182 being fly by wire.

Your old one might have just been fucked. There's too much of an overlap between 172 and 182s for you to be able to say one is better. Some 172s are faster than some 182s. When buying you're not likely to know which one you're getting.

Mike and put a 172 engine in my 182 for me when I dropped a valve on a trackday. I kept the inlet and exhaust manifolds so no difference in power that I can detect. Just needed a breather blanking off as the inlets are slightly different.
