Clio 200 EDC at Brands Hatch

Well, an amazing day, as expected the Clio performed faultless. SPORT mode all day, didn't use the paddles bar coming into Clearways in 4th where I had to blip down to 3rd. Other than it was brilliant, hit 105mph on the start/finish line but with the mist first thing the track was a bit greasy. TC would kick in heading to the finish line but I didn't really push hard, absolutely no point. After lunch the racing line was drying out so it gave me a chance to stretch its legs a bit more and it made the difference.

It's so on point, all I can say it what little I've done to the 200 EDC is what it should have been like when it rolled off the production line.

It needs the map, absolutely need it. It's transformed the drive especially with the transmission software update.

The Cooksport springs not only give you the look but also perform really well.

What it could benefit from is a next level upgrade of brake pads up front. I'd probably flush out and replace the brake fluid for Motul just because I know it's good and know it'll be new and done.

So a few pit photos until MSV release the official ones

Loved the new shape when they first came out, even better as a Sport model with the front end DLR fogs and the rear diffuser. Perfect timing when this LY came up for sale

Rich doesn't drive on track. He builds cars then sells them as per traditional CS fashion.
He only booked this one to avoid breakfast on Sunday IIRC.
You forgot to include the word fantastic in between builds and cars :tongueout:

Sounds like fun. Out if interest why didn't you use the paddles? I'd have thought race mode would have been the best option on track.

As Kev said the track was fairly greasy in the morning due to heavy mist. RACE mode disengages TC so I left it in SPORT mode.

The beauty of paddles is regardless of being in AUTO mode you can override the gear selection at anytime. So in Clearways for me it stayed in 4th and bogged down, the blip of the paddle instantly drops it to 3rd and helped pull me round the corner. To be fair I could have rode it out in 4th and did sometimes in the morning as 3rd gear hard out to the straight would induce TC whereas in the afternoon on a dryer line it would grip and use all the power. We're talking 250 torque so even in 4th it'll pull nicely.

As for leaving it in SPORT auto mode, it's like you almost can't react as quick as the box. I have used them from time to time, maybe in a different track, another day I'll give it a go. This was my first trackday in the EDC so it's a learning curve with everything this car has to offer, and in my opinion it has a lot.

The beauty of not using the paddles is that it enables you to focus more on the corners, braking, apex. Let the car do the gear changes so you concentrate on everything else, your hands never really leave the steering wheel. To me that's the difference.

@Matt W hi bud re paddles probably because it's was damp in places and race mod turns everything off re TC stability control
Why on earth would you want TC/Stability control on on a 200bhp FWD hatchback lol.
On track you want to be 100% in control of the car surely, so that the car doesnt do anything daft like cut power half way through Paddock Hill Bend?!
How adjustable was the car on the limit, assuming as it was damp/greasy you were able to play around a little, does it allow you to trail brake and/or introduce any lift off oversteer etc?

I'm no Stig, I'll give it a go out there. You're more than welcome to have a go in it, genuine offer.

It's my car, I don't give a f**k about a few fingerprints. If that's what would bug me on a trackday I might as well shoot myself now.

Touchy!

It's not about being bugged on a trackday, it's about getting your hands filthy and then smearing it all over the inside of the car/steering wheel/leg of your trousers! There's a handle on the inside so you don't have to do that.

Being brutally honest, once you've finished messing about with it, id love to come out with you & see what its capable of performance wise compared to the Mini!!

@nutnutwelshman very good to know - I saw your pics at Spa, looked great!
Funny isnt it, when new at £20k, they weren't really a consideration as a nearly new mk7 gti was similar price, now they have hemorrhaged money through epic Renault depreciation, they are considerably more interesting 😂

With mine I'll probably go FMIC and another map, uprated pads and fluid.
I'm also looking into a second set of wheels to fit either Nankangs or Federal (whatever's best)

Great thread Rich, as others have said these are also really growing on me!

Loving the updates. Keep up the good work!
Cheers Rob  I should really do a dedicated project thread to keep all the updates in one place. For me it's a great car, it does everything I need it to do. I like the fact I can just rock up to any track, rag round all day, then just come home with no dramas.

Great thread nice to see someone doing something a little different for a change keep up the good work
Thank you, I was thinking this earlier. It's 4 years now since the launch and you don't really hear much about these cars, they're still a bit of an unknown quantity here. I believe they're sold worldwide so I guess unless you join certain specialist Mk4 forums then they go under the radar.
There are companies out there that do aftermarket products but what I think it is, is they're all sold with the Renault 4 warranty so not many people break away and make the changes from OE, I might be wrong. Coupled that with the supposed luke warm reviews and sales then it's a uphill task.
It's funny that since I've started posting about the likes of fitting Cooksport springs and having it mapped by RS Tuning that people that own the Clio have messaged me asking for opinions and awaiting feedback on the products. I might be wrong there's probably s**t loads of people with modified Mk4s 😂
