Water pump saga …… while the pump came off without a fight the old gasket is far from the same story …… finally I took the bumper and cross member off to get easier access (knowing it will also help with the aux belt) ……. I tried a simple wall paper scraper (too dam 'ard), then a wire brush on a drill (no real access), then paint stripper, then special gasket stripper = triple X paint stripper and even then I still needed the scrapper, a razor blade and the wire brush (smaller one) …. WTF…. well it's off now ……. but at what cost …… Any thoughts on putting a thin layer of cam cover sealant between the gasket and the engine block …… to fill those little nicks I've put in it ????? see picture

cambelt.jpg Cambelt installed … well almost ….
in place with more of a fight than I expected ….. adjusted tension 4 times before … moving onto the lower cambelt cover
….. HOW DOES THIS go in ….. I've tried bottom & bottom back door entry … but there is no room to slide it past the cambelt and or crank pulley !!!
I am STUCK …. HELP !!!
note the one in this image is the old busted one …. I don't want to force the new one !?!?!?

  330i. E30 Touring.
Fiddly fucker to get the cover back in. I loosened the gearbox mount, pushed the engine right over and that gave just enough room to wiggle in from the top.

Would also like to know a trick of how it goes in..

Haha true, but I too wish I'd paid someone when I make errors!
Well Davvy ... I recon I am doing this BECAUSE I PAID a pro to change the belts in sept 2015 and then poooof ..... of corse he did nothing wrong and wants to charge over 2500 to put it right ... frankly I'd rather screw it up myself ... plus ... it's a sort of twisted FUN!!! ;)
I read a posting where someone claims it slides in from around the back of the engine ..... but not for me ..... not today anyway

OK lads… here's how to put on the lower cambelt cover according to Wayne …..
1. Remove cambelt, crankshaft pulley and front idler pulley !
2. fit only lower idler pulley and tensioner pulley …. camshaft pulleys are nice to have ;)
3. jack engine up about 5cm clear of chassis … so crankshaft is still clearly visible through the wheel arch
4. slide lower cambelt cover in from the back of the engine …. put in front bolt to loosely hold it (stop it falling down)
5. slip cambelt down through the plastic cover and pull down plenty so crankshaft pulley can be slipped on
6. pull cam belt back up and seat it on the crankshaft pulley
7. thread cambelt around tensioner, then exhaust and then inlet pulleys
8. check it's seated and aligned to give max. slack then fit the front idler pulley
9. Jack engine up as far as you dare to allow best possible access to tensioner pulley
10. go through the cam belt tensioning procedure ……..)
what NOT to do…...
1. do NOT put the front idler pulley on top of the engine
-> it WILL fall off down the back and never be seen again :(
2. do NOT let the engine slip off the jack and split the plastic cover into two pieces
-> they are very expensive (for what they are) :(
good luck!!

update on cambelt setting ....
So I've jumped through the hoops - tension cambelt -> torque up crank shaft pulley -> torque up inlet camshaft pulley -> torque up exhaust camshaft pulley -> remove camshaft locking & aligment tools and pop!!
When I pull out the aligment tool (it was kind of stuck in) the inlet camshaft moved a few degrees like it was sprung loaded or something
HOW is that possible ???
I guess I need to slacken off the two camshaft pulleys and jump through the same hoops again ... but how to avoid the same results ????
and in theory new nuts and bolts !!!!
all comments welcome.......

btw I did clean all the shafts and pulleys with brake cleaner TWICE ....

seems there is some play in both the old and new VVT inlet camshaft pulley …. which makes sense if it is meant to be variable ….. if so, then …. how to set it (cam belt timing) up correctly when there is no oil pressure ???
all comments welcome ???
