All it basically does is soften the light by enlarging the light source
The overlapping cardboard on the sides is to prevent lighttrails.

Just got myself the "cheap" Tamron 70-300mm and went to the local Bison Ranch to try it out.
Finally got enough focal length to get a decent shot of them as they don't like human interaction at all.
