Cleaning an induction kit filter?

Its actually for the Civic but hey, the place is a treasure trove of info!

I'm potentially buying a k&n induction kit (2nd hand) this week. The thing is in good condition however the filter is a touch dirty, are these easily cleaned? Specific method?

Wash it, dry it, oil it.

K&N do cleaning kits.

I bought 2 k&n cleaning kits from Eurocar parts for 18 quid,just make sure you get plenty of cleaning fluid as the oil lasts for ages.

Use Autoglym engine and machine cleaner . Squirt it liberally all over the filter then wash it under the tap from the inside out pushing the dirt out , then recoat with oil .

If your car has a MAF sensor in the induction pipe it's not advisable to fit Air filters that require oil. The oil sticks to the sensor wire and causes havoc.
(My Subaru has one, as did my fabia)

Ive always washed mine with soapy water until clean, rinsed thoroughly and then stood on the garden wall to air dry.

I would never oil them, it just causes problems.

That's fine as long as you have a filter that doesn't require oil.

Running a K&N without oil for example, you may as well not bother with a filter at all. It's the oil that catches the dirt and stops it from entering the engine.

Same here. But then I use the oil spray on it afterwards. Rather than get your hands coated in the stuff as well, I normally chuck the freshly cleaned filter into a carrier bag and spray into the bag. Then just keep squeezing and kneading it until it's properly covered.

You could just get a dry flow replacement filter or even the Ramair foam filter people use on here for fatty inductions.

EP3 Type R doesn't run a MAF so it's not so bad using an oil type filter, might still be worth checking the MAP sensor and IAT sensor to ensure they're clean.

K&N is a cotton filter element, cleaning with petrol can damage the filter element.
Warm water or the K&N filter recharger kits are the best bet.

The filter needs re-oiling after, the oil does all the actual filtering of the crap out of the air.
