Flocked Dashboard

Hi, so I attempted to have a go at flocking my dashboard this weekend, watched a few videos, thought it looked fairly straight forward. Bought myself a flocking kit from FlocKing. Didn't quite go to plan though.

The end result was quite patchy, I'm assuming either the glue set before I could get the fibres on or I didn't use enough glue in certain places.

Has any one had any experience doing this themselves? I'm assuming I'll have to remove all the flock before trying again, I cant just fill in the gaps.

Also the adhesive that's available on eBay is quite expensive - £10 for a small bottle, does anyone know of a cheaper alternative I could use that I could just dye black?

Anyone know anything about which applicators are best, does using an electronic one make much difference?

Any advice suggestions would be good!

Cheers

I'd be careful trying to remove the flock as the dash will be quite easy to tear/take a chunk out of.
I didn't flock mine myself, friend of a friend did it - but from what you've said I'd say possibly a mixture of not enough glue & not enough flock, creating patches.
Have you had a look to see if 3M do an adhesive that would do the job? They usually have a glue for everything

Yeah, apparently turps will take it off, then just lightly sand the remainder away. It's cool though I bought a spare dash to test on, I didn't expect it to go smoothly my first time!

No I've not, problem is I don't know what the base of the adhesive is to buy a different one, some sort of PVA I'm assuming

I have flocked my interior door pulls, Bought the kit from Flocking and have had similar results, looked like it had covered quite well but when dry lots of the flock was not adhered and left me with a patchy finish. Not too noticeable unless you look closely but I imagine the same result of a dash would be more noticeable. The instructions said to apply a generous amount of adhesive which I tried to do but after putting so much on I found the brush was putting on as much as it was taking off. Did you get the kit with the puffer bottle?

Yeah I got the puffer bottle with my kit, it wasnt great, after a while it just started blowing the flock off.

I've had another go at the weekend but this time I made my own adhesive and a mini flocker out of a poster tube https://www.installer.com/photos/flkmini.jpg I just tried on a scrap piece of wood this time, had a much better result.
I've ordered an electrostatic flock applicator to see how much difference that makes, going to attempt to get the flock off the dashboard and give that another go.

Could you not apply the flock like glitter? As in apply glue, dump the flock on, shake it off, scoop up, dump on, .....

That's kinda the process but the problem is that the glue dries so quickly, like 10-15 mins so you only really get one go, and covering a whole dash in glue and flock in that time is really tricky. Cant do it in sections either because you can see the joins.

I flocked mine over a year ago without a kit, I used some black flock from eBay and some enamel paint I sanded my dash and put on one coat allowed it to dry and put on a heavy second coat instead of the applicator I used a sauce squeezy bottle with a 1/3 full of flock and puffed the flock onto the wet paint let it dry overnight it worked very well and cost a lot less then those over priced kits.

i had the same problem got the kit of ebay from flockking same person you got yours,
i have flocked a couple of the parts in the car but the glue they provide is not the best at all it drys to quick and then get patch work in the end. i just took it back off and got some pvc and some die much better results now

I seem to have had better results making my own adhesive, I just used some wood glue, some black acrylic paint and water. The DIY method seems to be the best, watched a video of some guys using pringles tubes as applicators, that seemed to work for them too. Curious to see what difference the electrostatic applicator makes though.

Mine was done electrstatically, there are still areas that are coated thinner, but you can't really see them.
Only word of warning, when you fit it, first time you put the blowers on - close your eyes and mouth!

Just thought I'd post a couple of pics of my finished result. Needs some touching up hear and there but overall I'm happy with it.
