Paint or Powdercoat?

Hi all,

Got some Turinis that could do with a spruce up. Looking for an OEM kind of finish, Silver with a little bit of flake but not OTT. Dropped them off at a powdercoaters yesterday and had a look at a few finishes. They had silver with no flake in it and a few really sparkly silvers but nothing inbetween and the more I think about it, the more I think the sparkly ones were, well, way too sparkly for me.

Been in touch with another company who have recommended painting rather than powdercoating for the finish in looking for. I know OEM wheels are painted but is it the best route to go down? Anyone with any experience of both?

Steer clear of having wheels powder coated buddy. If they chip or curb then water will get in behind the coating and it will bubble & start flaking off. Seen it happen so many times with wheels completely fu##ed with powder coating.

I've always had my wheels wet painted after a bad experience with powder coating and the world's your oyster with painting regarding exact colour matching.

Hello mate. I had my Turinis powdercoated at CAS Coatings in Bradford. The finish was spot on and lasted perfectly the whole time I had the car. I know a good few other members that had wheels done there too with the same experience.

They charge £1 per inch (so a 16'' wheel is £16).

I work in a bodyshop so I see refurbished painted wheels daily. We also use a sub contracting company (Phoenix alloys) to do our powder coating and our diamond cutting.

For me, powder coating process is a lot better. Dipped, stripped, blasted, oxidized, powder primer, wet paint, powder lacquer. You know the job is done right.

Painting wheels (unless taking the Tyre off and following the same process as above) tends to be to DA the kerb marks out, scotch pad all over, primer and paint. Out the door.

I prefer knowing that the whole wheel has been done, inside and outside.

Wheels are currently being powdercoated as when I contacted the company I'd dropped the wheels off he'd already had the tyres off and had fully stripped the wheels, so I couldn't really pick them up and take them elsewhere.

I've seen CAS Coatings and I know a few people that have been with differing experiences. In all honesty, I just couldn't be bothered having the tyres removed and refitted somewhere else.

We'll see what they're like when I pick them up, anything will be an improvement tbf.

They're being done by LCS in Barnsley. £200 for a set of Turinis, that's with everything done including tyres on and off. Nothing but good reviews and not far from me, however @OssPoop had his done last week and wasn't massively impressed with the finish I don't think. That guy doing them did say when his were stripped they weren't in the best of conditions though, not sure if that had something to do with it.

What i've always wondered is how they get metallic like finishes with powdercoat?

Surely because the powder is basically a plastic attracted to a static charge, then adding metallic flake wouldn't stick?

Or do they powdercoat them first and then apply a painted layer over the top to get the metallic finish?

I like a mixture of daniels process. Stripped, powder primed for imperfections. They then are flattened by us and hand coloured and hand lacquered.

You cannot replicate factory colours with powdercoat either and when they chip they are shockingly bad.

I got a quote from Yorvik Engineering in York who have a brilliant rep and they stated that they have all OEM Renault colours in powdercoat. I've read that factory colours can't be replicated with powdercoat so not sure if that's just sales patter or whether they just have a very good match.

Lcs said when blasted my wheels were very badly corroded. The paint was flaking off them a bit but they didn't look that bad to me. They said they had to blast one if them twice as the powder didn't take. The finish now is lumpy when you look close, the powder is that thick that none of the I'd stamps on the wheels are legible! They are nice and sparkly though. I think next year I'll try getting them redone elsewhere.

Thats s**t mate, take them back and tell them youre not happy.
 
Honestly stay clear of powder coating on car parts. Wet paint is the way to go. Powder only for industrial equipment!!!!

Not going to happen, they weren't exactly they easiest to deal with either. I went to colly as agreed to then be told the wheels weren't done. "oh, didn't he ring you?" Yeah I just thought I'd rock up anyway. I never saw the guy in charge, spoke to him a couple of times and messaged on Facebook but when you get there it's a bit unorganised. I don't have time for the hassle.
