197 Gearbox Issues

Any ideas on the following:

Recently, if I'm very very high revs, 3rd to 4th gear isn't exactly smooth. There isn't crunching or anything, but it doesn't 'smoothly' move in to 4th - Signs of a failing synchro I would've guessed.

Now, the other day I was coming down a dual carriageway, I had a quick whiff of a burning smell and then stopped at lights. From there, the car wouldn't go back in to gear while the engine was on. I turned the engine off, put it in to 5th, engine back on, high revs and pulled away - since then, touch wood, the car has been ok.. but what could the cause of this all be? I'm under the impression that if a box is f*cked (in the sense it wouldn't let me select a gear) then it's f*cked.. there is no temperamental issues with the box itself and that it either works or doesn't?

Any ideas?

Cheers

I personally was thinking clutch but it was only that once. I'm more confused why it would've gone in to gear with the engine off but struggled while it was on.

I'm guessing because the clutch wasn't fully engaging/disengaging due to the slave cylinder. Essentially the same as trying to put it in gear without the use of the clutch. Did it grind when you tried to put it in gear with the engine running?

This may sound a stupid question, but if the slave cylinder fails again, is there anything I can do to get it in gear? It's more so that if it happens again, I can either rule out it being the slave cylinder or be sure it is that - if that makes any sense?

Yeah put it in gear with the engine off, then press the start button. You'll be stuck with only 1 gear, but it would get you out the s**t.

You can drive your car without a clutch....
Engine off, put it in first gear and your off!
For second gear :pull out of first, blip ans carefully push into second...rinse and repeat.
Not the most relaxing way to drive, but brought a car home twice with this.

Yep, is possible to drive using gears without a clutch, rev-matching the box and engine to slot it into gear. Approaching roundabouts and traffic lights is where the fun is.

Yeah, but with the Mk3 it's starting it that's the issue because of the push button start not letting you.
My slave cylinder failed on the way back from the Ring and it was like the OP described. Had to drive it back from Maidenhead by rev matching and keeping it rolling. 😂

Mine happened in Maidenhead too.. something in the air?

I had no issues stopping and starting the engine on the button.

The start button just goes off the clutch/brake pedal sensor, so no issue there if the slave goes.

To be entirely honest, I wouldn't have a clue how to start fault finding without just replacing everything one by one and hoping it's one of the earlier options - is there an easier way?

Clutch and slave cylinder is £220 from RPD, might be worth doing the lot while it's apart?
