Iceberg 172 Cup

Thought I’d create a bit of a journal on this considering I’ve had the car since last August/September and have just been spamming the “what have you done to your car thread”.

Bit of a brief Renault ownership history, this is Cup number 2 after having a Mondial Blue Cup in 2010 for about 3 years and 4th Clio in total. I loved that car did a fair few track days and the biggest highlight was getting to drive it on the Ring.

Moving on to 2023 it was my 40th was on the horizon and I fancied another Cup, my old one above came up for sale from the person who I originally sold it to, I thought it was fate but sadly in those 10 years it didn’t seem to have had the best of life and looking rather ropey. So instead of looking for another Blue Cup I began to search for the much rarer Iceberg Cup.

I started to look in all of the usual places for one but as you can imagine it they were quite thin on the ground. 2 came up for sale around the same time, one was cheap and appeared to need a lot of work, then there was the one I own now.

Obligatory petrol station shot.

As with any of my car purchases I just buy the first one I get to see. It’s by no means a show car but it looked pretty presentable (except for the exhaust but we’ll come back to that) and appeared to be relatively well looked after. This also has been owned by a few members on this forum so it was good so see some of its history on here.

Arriving back home.

And tucked away.

Nipped up to The Motorisit to give it a bit of a shakedown and to get to know it quirks. Picked a decent day for it.

Not much happened to the car after that it just got put away for a few weeks whilst life got in the way.

Moving onto October first update to the car was the tires, they were really old PS3’s and beginning to crack which was a shame as they had loads of tread on them, so a quick Camskill order was made and had a fresh set of PS3’s to be thrown on.

After that it was MoT time which it flew through with only a few minor things to sort.

To be continued….

As said in the first post, I always had an issue with the exhaust. It was a K-Tec resonated system but I was never really keen on the cut out/recessed exhaust style on the 172 and much preferred the clean hidden look as standard, and also the example on this one wasn’t particularly well executed either.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

So a plan was put in place to find a new unmolested bumper and a K-Tec stealth exhaust.

Parts acquired from here and FB.

This weekend just gone was the ideal time to get it fitted. As the two systems were the same brand I left the centre section that existed on the car and just swapped the back box over.

Trial fitted.

It took quite a bit of time adjusting it, and at one point it began to melt the bumper, so off it came again so we could shorten the midsection to give it a bit more clearance.

That’s more like it.

We didn’t need to use the jerryrigged TRS mount this time as the power flex mount seems more than up to the job holding it all up.

And the final result.

Ah much better 👌

Great find, love a silver cup. Hopefully see it sometime at the Motorist

Yep hoping to make it there more often now the weather is improving. Just wished it was a bit closer to home as I’d be there most weekends.

Very nice mate. I recall seeing it in person at the Motorist for that French car morning, think I was parked opposite, hopefully see it again soon!

Yeah I remember, was a very quiet turnout from what I recall. I’ll make an effort to say hello next time 👍
