I had to remove the tree sap that stuck to my car when I parked under a huge tree. I didn't know the place much so I simply parked there. What I did was to rub the spots with wet cloth and applied small amount ethanol on those spots.
If you have a picture then its better for us to analyze, well anyway I am assuming that it is under the battery. Try to use a deep socket with extension so you can reach it and put a jack stand on the engine and lift it a bit.
Release bearing is always the culprit. Go to a mechanic and let him check under the hood on the clutch section, let him hear the whirring noise that you've been hearing. The repair is not cheap and also the parts.
