It's a 6 point socket, 30mm and deep. It's as if when I'm pressing down on the bar the pressure is going to the wrong place, not the nut/socket. That's why I think a normal socket will work. There's a little play in the socket but don't want to buy a smaller socket. Well I watch a video on...

After much research today it seems that the clunking noise is most likely down to the CV joint.
