Jack it up and place the axel stand underneath somewhere suitable. You dont have to take it off the jack though. If in the worst possible scenario it falls, it will only fall a few mm onto the stand.

Id say remove the big outer nut too. Then the whole strut should just pull through from underneath.
C spanners are crap, get some large grips or turn them with a screwdriver and hammer as said.
