172 Cup Stage Rally Car

The class system is just bonkers at national level in my view, but that's a whole other story.

What kind of things were you up against? Good result either way, was it your first time there?

Was getting my arse kicked by a suzuki swift (bit like a works car as it is Jamie jukes who owns Spencer sport that also run Tom Cave), but he broke down so I won, beating an Astra, Golf gtis, and a Seat.

First time there, first closed road tarmac rally, 2nd time ever on pacenotes.

Funny, I met Jamie at the Rally GB media preview a couple of years ago. He took me for a spin in his Swift, has a 2.0 Duratec Ford lump in it? He does seem to be a bit unlucky with reliability in that car but it certainly goes well and he is a pretty handy driver. Nice bloke too.

Sounds like a great result, well done. Manx is definitely on my list one day. Need to finish a car first mind!

yeah its 250+bhp, big wheels, big suspension, big brakes etc etc. Its a proper bit of kit but reliability does seem its downfall. And yes he is a good pilot and hell of a nice bloke too.

I got round with no real issues except the bulb blowing out in the map light. Finished with the tyres I started on and didn't even take a wheel off or anything in service. The teams around me were taking the piss asking when I was going to service the car.
Only thing I did was give it bit of a wipe over. If it aint broke, don't fix it!! I wasn't going to create more work for myself as there was only me there to do anything to it.

Was going to ask about whether you managed on your own or dragged in folk to help as a pit crew. Shows it can be done on your own then. Great that you were problem free.

Suppose I had better update with what I did to the car before I went to the Isle of Man.
It was mainly electrical stuff for the extra lighting.
3 new Relays, wiring and switches for the Gas discharge lamps and the LED light bar.
New relay and codriver foot operated switch for horns.
New LED interior light.
New flexible map light.
Wiring from the electronic speedo to the new Monet Trip meter and power wiring.
New wiring to the intercom.
Power wires are now run through a new multi fused busbar mounted on a new panel along with the ODB port and lighter socket.

LED light bar bolts onto the bonnet into a couple of stainless rivnuts and the cable goes through a grommet and plugs underneath.
The Gas discharge lamps are bolted onto a rail along with the ballast packs so they can be removed in one piece. They just have some bonnet stays that attach to the bonnet with 2 R clips, and the wires are on waterproof plugs into the ballast packs.
This means that after the night stages I can unplug and remove all lights quickly and easily.
When I first fitted the lights. I have since sprayed the lamps anthracite and brackets black so they look better

New trip meter - with titanium mounting bracket! !

New lights switches, painted the panel, new lower plate with fusebox etc

Also before I went I fitted new bottom arms, a new cv boot, had it tracked again and swopped tyres so I had all my rally tyres on my rims.
As per usual it was all last minute stuff as I had to make sure I got to the ferry in time.

Cage is SD from the group buy and is the full bolt in jobby, cross diagonals, harness bars, tunnel brace and cross door bars.
Worst fitting cage I have ever fitted. (And i have fitted quite a few), and apparently I wasnt fitting it correctly! I didn't dignify them with a response to that.
Had to modify all the mounting plates to get it to fit in properly as the front top bar hit the screen (not just slightly either, it cracked it on my original planned rally shell). It had to go lower and further back. I would be very dubious about trying another. I have had better fitting OMP/sparco cages.
This car will probably be up for sale soon so I can do something more family based with my kids as I feel a bit selfish doing rallying as it's just for me.
I am rallying it again on Sunday on the Adgespeed stages rally at 3 sisters in Wigan.

What do you reckon the car is worth Paul, out of interest? Drop me a PM if you prefer :)

Rally starts at 10am, usually on until 5ish I think. @shiftspark

What's ive spent and what it's worth are 2 different things so I'm not totally sure yet.
Just glad I dont have to add labour charges onto the value.
It would be interesting to see what others value it at.

My offer still stands. But will increase to three hugs and a high five.

I also competed on the Adgespeed stages on sunday at 3 sisters in Wigan and had good fun although I struggled with front grip (needed a rarb on really but didn't think)

Had crap seeding so ended up catching slower cars costing me time.
Finished 13th overall and 4th in class (3 secs off 3rd, 4 secs off 2nd, and 1st fwd although no award for that.)

The stages look immense, have you been on Epynt ? I did years back and after doing events at 3 sisters or Aintree 20 minute stages were epic.

I have road rallied over epynt a few times but havnt done a stage rally on there. I loved road rallying over there though.
Manx stages were awesome, I just needed proflex or something for those bumps, I was really having to back of in places.

Always wondered that.

Everyone along the route is PR'd, and there are road closure orders in place. They are probably so used to it all by now though on the island with all the different events that go on (cars, bikes etc) that they know what to do.

Great videos Paul.

Really do want to rally my 172 some day, would make such a good little car. If only I'd known that before I started the Escort!

Isle of Man videos are great, your light setup on the night stages was impressive, I would be interested to know which ones you are using as that is something I haven't looked into for our build.
It's frustrating when you have to back off for the bumps but better that than a potentially large accident. That's the reason we have bitten the bullet and are talking to Reiger to sort ours out. It's not cheap but hopefully money well spent.

Ian speedy ran reigers on his rally Clio. You'll not go far wrong with those mate.

Lights were new headlamps with 100w bulbs in all, Hella gas discharge lamps (left lense is a spot, right is a drive) and an LED light bar that cost £40 on ebay!

I ran out of money so Bilstein had to do. Still won the class but would have liked to go faster and finish higher up.
The car did it's job and finished the rally, that's the main thing.

I know Evogone runs Reiger as well. Been emailing Zoltan at Reiger UK and just waiting for finalised spec and drawings and then 4-6 weeks for delivery.

We used to run Bilsteins when we had the Integrale and it was pretty good to be fair, pity the rest of the car wasn't as reliable

Saying that, the dampers are alright, I was just bottoming out the springs
20161001_124912.jpg

I need to get a longer, harder spring for the front, and something different for the rear

Looking at doing the Glyn Memorial stages at Anglesey end of November
Always fancied a trip to Anglesey but unfortunately I'll be in Mexico at the time. Hopefully catch up at a later event. There is a great event at Cadwell Park that's usually mid April so that's our target for our build.

Heres a pic from Sunday.
The tyres (Michelin medium rally tyres) were certainly hanging on going round Lunar!! Almost hitting the rim!

No ARB on this one, although I could have done with one at the weekend as I used to sprint at Wigan and always had an ARB.
I don't use a Whiteline any more as it hangs down too low for rough and bumpy stages. I want to try a PMS ARB as it goes above the beam so less likely to get caught/damaged.
Rear suspension is just standard bilstein b14, and some camber shims.

You can rotate the arb brackets around so that its nowhere near the floor and much like the pms one.

Will have to look into that. I sold my last RARB with the old shell/car
