Not special but they can be tricky if you've never done one before. The biggest risk on these is damaging the fuel lines/ connections to the HP fuel pump or contamination in to the fuel system.

I can massively recommend Two Techs in Dartford. They changed my belts and dephaser in November last year, and she's still going strong. Fantastic service from a really enthusiastic team who are passionate about our cars. Was back there again today for a service and suspension setup/wheel alignment. 10/10.

+1. You'll never go wrong having work done from them. Always worth the journey there.

Agreed. Great, friendly, knowledgeable guys. Helped me out on a good few occasions and definitely worth the journey.

do you have to use the locking tool on the front because i already have the one that fits into the rear of the cams behind the plastic caps

Yes you do.

That one isn't a locking tool and if used as one it will bend and potentially damage the end of the cam's.

i guess it hold the pulleys in place then but surely if you change the dephaser pulley you have too take it off anyway

The pulley lock is just to allow safe tightening and loosing of the cam shaft nut/bolts.
You put the lock on, loosen the nut & bolt, then take the lock off, replace the dephaser, then put the lock back on ready for tightening. (simplified and ignoring the main belt procedure/tensioning etc).

Hey guys I'm looking to get this dreaded service done (cam belt, aux + tensioners) as I'm a little bit chicken when it comes to timing or delving inside of the engine. I went to M-Tech in Worthing to get a quote and they were left scratching their heads when I mentioned the dephaser additionally would need replacing which they did not know what it was!? I've since been back twice but they were still searching for prices...
I've now looked at K-Tech racing Ltd in Dorset - Anyone had any experience there? Their prices don't look too bad (I think anyway).

Wicked  cheers guys. I think I'll try Portsmouth first as I keep putting it off (104,000 now on the clock).

  RB 200
Rather than start a new thread, my 200 is due it's belts/rollers/water pump + it's 6 year service. Been quoted £585 (+vat) for the lot, does this sound a fair price? This doesn't include the dephaser pully, apparently they're not common on the 200 but if I did want it doing it's another £120. So, would that need doing too, or can I save myself the £120?

Cheers

Haha well I do have the belt kit in the car and I have done a lot more research and I now have met several folk who are local and can help me with it as they have done it before, been buying parts of a boy with 2 sunflower ph1's and everyone near me with ph1 know him and now has become easier to do it on my own. Still haven't done yet though I was doing the alternator belt kit which I done with no problems when I figured out how to loosen the tensioner and noticed my belts had been changed before they were timing marks all over the dephaser and exhaust but I reckon it was just the belts and nothing else was changed. My plan is still maybe do it myself after I get a new dephaser for it and a couple of other bits Al rip the engine out and then get it done at a mates bit and do the clutch and that too. So far I still haven't spent £1100 on it including buying it and had much fun out of it already and it still has no sign giving up hitting almost 80,000 which is about 5 or 6000 more than when I was discussing the belts with everyone. Now I have pissed about inside the bay it isn't as daunting as it was made out to be and the reason I didn't try doing it yet was because I have just been reading and watching folk do it so I can get the gist of it. My mate is taking his to be done at rentech because he doesn't want to mess with it, I on the other hand don't care I have had my money's worth out of it and I don't mind doing the work myself I don't mind paying someone to but it's my car and I will do te work to it, it's easier now knowing folk who have done them and can help me do mine as there is a dephaser locking tool which gets passed round where we live so I will do it one day, I do like the car but it's just a car at the end of the day and it's going fine the now it can wait a wee bit for the belts to be done till ready haha
Well Smokey?.............ive been patiently waiting for your update and hoping you would prove all the doomers on here wrong. Did you do the belts on your Clio yourself?. I really, really hope you have!.

Guys I think my Defuser pulley is on the way out or going but I can't be hundred %, previous owner say he changed the cam belt and water pump last year but now I'm worrying if he cooked it up. Is there a good ren garage near Guildford? So I can see someone who knows as a few garages I have spoken to give me different stories and their answers don't add up.

The new cambelt and aux belt on my cup was arranged by the garage I bought it from and done by a mobile mechanic in Welwyn Garden City using Renault belts. After replacing he left the old belts in the Renault cardboard Box that the new belts came in.

I was a bit sceptical that the job had been done properly when I saw the paperwork was from a mobile mechanic who didn’t specialise in Renaults, however, the car drives very well and you can feel the kick at 5000rpm as usual so they must have had the right tools.

Next time it needs doing though I’ll use some more local to me (e.g Bucks Automotive or Beaniesport) as I’m based near Aylesbury.

If still be inclined to get the timing checked, I bet it's out.

Also the crank bolt should be replaced along with new cam pulley fixings.

there shouldn't be a kick at 5,000rpm. you should just about be able to feel a slight difference in how it pulls but not a kick and also it's got nothing to do with timing, it's emissions related.

Oh ok, didn't realise it was emissions related. I wouldn't describe it as a slight difference though as you can noticeably feel and hear the change at 5000rpm. Had this on previous clios too.

Cheers, the crank bolt and cam pulley fixings were changed too which I'm pleased about (the old parts were in the cardboard box I was left).

As it drives faultlessy and the engine pulls hard, is it even worth getting the timing checked?

induction noise can vary if you're not on standard set up but if you are then look at lambda and see what it's doing.

If you're happy then thats fine.

If you come to sell it though any buyer is going to knock you down for the dodgy belt change.

Its fueling related, well fueling map is the cause, with emissions being the result (lower under 5k as engine is running lean).

Stick it on a rolling road - healthy output is best proof its timed up well.

Why is it a dodgy timing belt change? It was done by a garage and I have paperwork for it. There is no reason why I should get knocked down on price just because a well known specialist hasn’t done the work. Anyway I’m not selling so it doesn’t matter

People seem to assume that unless you are a 'specialist' you CANNOT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES get it right. Which is b****cks. I've done 4 successfully (albeit 1 I had to redo as the cheap tool I used first was bent!! - serves me right for using a non genuine tool) with good tools and the freely available Renault instructions its perfectly possible to get the job done well.

I remember the days when only there was only Fred who could do a belt change on a 1*2 ! If anyone else even considered it it would end in a new engine at least !
Oh and of course then there was DEFASER PANIC :fearscream::fearscream:

because so many garages do f**k it up, either by not using the correct locking tools (the cheap ones are s**t and don't work) or not bothering with locking tools altogether and just muddling through (cos it's only a belt change right?)

If you don't have anything to show it was done by someone who knows what they're doing how can you say it's a decent job??
