completely stumped for what to try next.....

New to the forum so hi,
Recently bought a clio sport 172, trying my up most to find out what is causing and ticking/tapping/knocking noise from under the manifold area.

I paid for:
plugs, oil change (best i could buy),oil filter, engine flush, engine protection
new full cambelt kit
new aux belt and dephaser kit
water pump
(all brand new parts)

all in last month hoping and garage assuring me it would stop, but it hasnt. i feel a bit cheated by the garage but that is a different story.
Now the garage has pushed onto me it my be the cam shaft making the noise, and were talking about may as well put uprated cams in it etc which is another big bill i am guessing.

the main worry is if i pay another w/e amount and there is still the knocking/tapping noise, i would feel for people safety as im getting slighty pi*sed off, i am regretting falling in love with the car as my wallet has been raped, without seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. (happy to pay as-long as things get fixed)

Im just wondering if anyone has any issues similar to this as i cant seem to find any ending to this never ending battle.

Also if anyone can recommend anyone in the area of Cornwall , which is good with these cars. As i am losing patience.

Thanks for your time people, much appreciated

First of all welcome. I don't know if your a paid member or not but it is worthwhile becoming one for all your issues. As for the problem upload a video of said noise and I'm sure a member of the forum will help identify your problem.

With regards to a specialist I think dan@sjm is around the West Country area.

I have a slight tapping in that area. Was told it was warn cams and it shouldn't be an issue for many many many miles
It's a massive bill so I'm leaving it

hi thanks for the offer dan, my car is on 85k, i have only just had chance but taken a video, hopefully someone might kno something :) as im guessing your a bit of a trek away.
link to the video
only happens when warm, rattle/knock to about 2000rpm and either disappears or is drowned out by engine noise idk. As i said recent dephaser all belts etc, oil change and flush/protection forte stuff still no change, not sure if i have been mugged off by the garage with dodgey replacement or it is something else.
i swear my phone makes it louder then it actually is but im not sure,
thanks again for any replies

a guy local to me, said he had done 100s of clios and meganes like this , unless he was bulls*iting me.

Hard to say, them being miss-timed is a common thing as people do it wrong/don't have all the tools, so it's certainly one thing not to rule out.

Hopefully someone more informed will be in shortly :]

that dephaser is not new, it sounds very, very worn! that video is actually ideal for showing people what a worn dephaser sounds like! if you shut your eyes you would think it was an old taxi!

it goes away when it fills with oil at about 2krpm? 99% dephaser! You sure he hasnt put an old fucked one back on yours by mistake?!

Maybe he's used the Meg timing tools and not the Clio ones - just a thought .

I'd be getting the Cam timing checked before you go any further .

Tba - Id be asking why the garage didn't have the cam cover off to check the cams and followers ect . I'm only assuming that they haven't had the cams out as you've not mentioned that in the OP .

thanks for the reply guys, im gunna email the garage now asking some questions, as we all kno it costs enough money to get it sorted and he obv aint sorted it out, as for where i stand with the garage might have a nice long interesting battle on my hands.

Dont take it to Renault, they will charge you an arm and a leg. If you want to just leave the garage that did the job and take it to someone else, take it to @Dan@SJM. To be honest though, if you have only just had it changed, I would be kicking up a real fuss with whoever did it as they have properly fucked you over (if it is the dephaser, which with your symptoms + video it, 99% points to that). Who knows what else they didn't changed?!

@Dan@SJM will be able to tell you if you would new belts etc. He's always busy for a reason!
