do i need a port

ive built a custom box which has got a 12" 800W sub in it. the box isnt very deep but is quite wide, now when i have the boot open and music on, the sub seems to sound as if its bouncing off the bottom of the box and unbalancing the sound. would a port of say 70mm be any good to reduce the pressure build up and give the sub a better running performance? if not then what do people suggest?

What sub is it? Have you built the box to the right size that the sub needs? It will say on the Instructions, (if you have any) if the box will need a port and what size box it will need. Ported boxes are usually a lot larger than the non-ported ones.

also ported have to be tuned for best results, so just waking a port in may make reduce spl and sq, how about inverting the sub???
