We had a car day on Saturday. Lots was done. Including a nice pub lunch.

Most importantly for me, Alex sorted my map rev limit issue out on behalf of Engine Dynamics. The car happily revs to over 7k now.

Bring on Bedford on the 25th!

Bedford SEN Trackday Feb 2017

I took the car to Bedford on Saturday. Quite a few mates were either booked on too or came along for the social. @GrahamS @Ant_Smiggy @AlexW @masekwm @Jamie86 @Sir_Dave @Richie rich.

The weather was dry ish in the morning which allowed for some good sessions, and then it rained at lunch which made it a bit greasy, although it pretty much dried up again by the afternoon. Graham and I were the last ones out on track until it shut just before 5pm.

I had a serious misfire on Monday so I was a bit nervous about retiring on the day, but a new set of Renault leads solved the problem and 'Coptood' performed faultlessly. Not a single issue in 9 sessions throughout the day. (I'm sending my Magnecor leads back to them for a test).

The SPA oil gauge was also very handy to have, and I was constantly monitoring oil temps throughout the day. Adding a bit of tape to the grill to block airflow when it wasn't getting hot enough. It ended up staying around 100 degrees on a hard track session which is ideal, and coolant temps were as normal.

I had some great sessions sticking right behind Graham in his cup. Watching it move and bounce around on the limit throughout the corners was very cool. There were probably less than a few meters between us at times. Unfortunately I didn't turn spot meter on, so the Go Pro videos are all scrap

I spent Sunday cleaning the tar and rubber off the track wheels and the car. I also did a quick visual check over of the running gear etc and found I have a small grease leak. It's not too bad so I will just keep an eye on it for now.

One or two of the R888s are getting past their best now too, so I might have to get a new set at some point. I've also recently bought some new front windows without sliders, so I’ll be fitting them soon.

A great video from Graham's cup:

Snetterton Track day 14th April 2017

What could be better than a dry track day on a bank holiday Friday!

Well it didn't go to plan. The clutch broke at about 10:30am!! Which meant another wasted track day, as well as lots of time and money! It looks like it's a random failure for the second time.

On a positive note the car felt fantastic for the one session I did have. The boring on track video to follow shortly. The new windows don't rattle either which is nice, but it does gets VERY hot inside now. The clutch started to become and issue on my dads first session and we came in early to check it over. That's when we realised something had broken and called it a day.

One failure you can almost accept, but two... says to me that they are not up to the job. Mass produced so maybe it's poor quality control, who knows. It's not as if my car has much more power over a standard one and I'm probably the most mechanically sympathetic driver out there.

So, I now need to work out what route to go down and what new clutch to buy....... Any suggestions please fire away.

Big thanks to Alex for coming down to get the box out with me. It only took us about 45 minutes.

Oh really, that's a shame too. What Clio were you in? Standard Valeo clutch?

I'm sure I recognize your forum name, have we crossed paths before?

I was in a 172 Cup. Was gutted as it was my first time at Snetterton and loved it, well the two sessions i managed to squeeze in!! Think ive seen your car at Bedford a few times. I assume the clutch in it is original but i have gone for a Valeo as replacement. Being fitted by Beaniesport next week.

Unlucky with the clutch. Exact same story as me. Clutch failure wreaked box...

new clutch new box... failed 1st time out again wreaked box...

this time went with a LUK as looks a better clutch plus has covers etc for where the valeos are failing.

Didn't want to spend on a helex but would be my next option if happens again.

So you had a Valeo, it failed and ruined your box?

Then you fitted a new clutch, new box and it ruined it again!???

Now you've got a LUK in there working ok as of yet?

What failed on your clutches please mate?

Yip exactly.

First clutch lasted about 14 track day
Second lasted less than one day.

Each time it was they rivvits that went on the pressure plate. Letting it act like a blade and chop about 4 holes in the box.

f**k that's bad. Looks like I got lucky then and caught it with just one rivet failure.

How comes you went for a LUK clutch now, and not something considerably stronger!??

This is concerning, especially as i have a Valeo waiting to go into mine next week.

Surely this has to be rare considering the amount of members on here who have used Valeo replacements with no issues or have Valeo changed the type of pressure plate they use?

One was cost... second was feeling as if I don't need the full fat race clutch so I just didn't go for it.

I had it in a garage up here called Automek in East Kilbride and he works with mostly race cars. And it was him that refused to fit a valeo again after seeing what happened 😂
I had went out and bought another valeo thinking it was bad luck but he went out and bought a LUK and said it's quality is far better than what the valeo is. Also had up covers over the rivet parts so if the did fail they don't come out and kill the box.

Couldn't say I could tell a difference on clutch feel or anything. And held up well last Sunday so will wait and see.

Look up about it... actually super common. Happened to a good few I know. Again that garage I had my car in Automek said he looked into it and then refused to fit valeo again 😂 had to send it back.

A lot of people are thinking if it's OEM then it must be good I think tbh, I wouldn't advise to fit another.

The more I look into it the more common it seems. I've come across some catastrophic failures from fellow RS owners and now almost consider myself lucky...

That's good to know thanks mate. I will take a look at the LUK ones. But I think I'm set on getting a Helix now though.

So just very quickly I can count a few failures. Some very nasty.

Mine - twice - Valeo
@chris-foci - once? - Valeo
@CallyTeee - twice - Valeo (destroyed box)
Tony Hunter - At least once? - Valeo (destroyed everything in the area)
@masekwm Quaife'd box - once - Valeo (destroyed absolutely everything in the area)

And that's just the small circle of people talking about it right here right now. Probably a lot more catastrophic failures out there. As well as loads of people who haven't had any issues at all.

But on those statistics alone. I wouldn't be fitting another Valeo in mine. Not worth the risk to the box and block.

FYI, mine was fitted by a Renault specialist on both occasions. The failure was a manufacturing defect. Nothing related to driving style.
