NZ Clio 172 - build thread

  182 trackcar, XC60t6
Bought my first Clio a few years ago and have grown to love these little fighters. It's a daily driver with occasional track days now. Mods with it were slotted 280mm rotors, 16in wheels. Since I have had I have;
- got a set of 15s for daily use and left the 16s for the track
- a bit of weight reduction including removing rear wiper, engine weight, PureMS air con delete and top mounts, fattys induction fitted. Just rear mounted the battery and have sport lines to go in tomorrow.

Thanks :) Yes finding tires for 16s can be a problem. Have had toyo t1r and now have new Kumho V70 semislicks to go on. 16s should be stiffer in the sidewall??

No difference in the stiffness of the tyre on 15/16 if the same make etc. Most go for 15's as the tyres are cheaper.

Can't wait. Gotta say getting parts in New Zealand isn't that easy. Lots of freight cost and these cars are very rare here.

Where abouts you located bud? I'm down in Christchurch, my mates currently fixing up his 182 here, would be cool to have a mini meet haha, although I don't own a clio anymore. These cars definitely show up the horde of Hondas at track days here.

DRY ICE!! Update time. I bought a lightly written off FF 182 from Christchurch (NZ) a week or so ago (@Ayven!!). It's going to be a track toy. I've stripped the interior out and today smashed the tar sound deadening out in 20minutes. I used dry ice. About 2kg was plenty. $8/kg then smashed the frozen tar with a hammer which was very satisfying.

Aircon out. Heater out. Repainted rims and Kumho V70a semi slicks home today too. A good day.

Managed to fit a rear tow strap quite tidy as well. Pulled the trim, cut in behind and pushed a 2000kg rated ratchet strap end through. Mounted to the chassis with a bow shackle.

Trimmed the trim. Nice result for no cost.

Aerocatches in. Fair bit of messing around. Bit worried they are not far enough forward. Note to self for next time - push nuts into backing plate so they don't drop down inside the bonnet recesses!

Here's an alternative brake cooling duct setup. Found these at the home depot store. 100mm pvc pipe connection and flexible downpipe adaptor. Mint.

. Pic of the bits removed. Also used a step drill to open out the top hole on the tensioner.

. Found that a draw bolt rather than a hose clamp (similar but stronger) worked well. 90mm between centres seems to be the correct compression of the tension spring.

I see my old car is undergoing a major transformation!

Have a few modified parts coming out of my 172 in Auckland if you're interested.

Cheers,
David

Hi David,
I'm also in Auckland; just bought a 2001 172 about a month ago. I was really enjoying it until Sunday morning.... Auxillary belt shredded & the timing belt jumped teeth. Pulling the head off this week so will see how deep the damage goes; but I think I'm in the market for at least a good cylinder head if you happen to have one or know of one in the country?

Cheers,
Matt

Jacam; looks like a weapon you're building! I'll be down at Manfeild in Feb for NZTC if you'll be around at all. And if you have any parts available let me know :) Cheers

Heya mate, good to see the progress on the old 182! I'll be watching intently, if you need any information feel free to send me a message. She handled beautifully at Ruapuna down here, I'm sure it'll be a right weapon with the way it's going. Good luck!

Hi Matt,
Afraid not ... plenty of other bits though.

First time out of the garage for a quick wash. Doesn't look too bad for having been through a chain link fence. Track time here we come (thermostat not working tho)

Looks good, like the wheels, what you think of the kumhos? Was going to get some but a bit put off with the fact they only come with like 4mm tread?

Why does it have a 182 rear bumper? Are you making a 182 exhaust for it?

Thread is a bit confusing sorry. I started with a silver 172 but then bought this 182 as a track car. Haven't tried the kumhos yet.

Manfield track day report : 182 went awesome. It was the first time I have driven it and managed to get my best lap down to 1:26.0 - well happy. Shot below of the pits setup - the MX5 beside was turbo'd with a few trick bits and sticky tires. They were very surprised that the little Clio was a few seconds quicker!

Khumo V70 semi slicks were great on track. I ended up running pressures lower and lower. Next time I will start cold at 25psi rear 26 front I think. Heres the 182 with my DD 172.

Next step for the 182 is seat rails for the sparco bucket seat.

Good to see the Clio hitting the track! Not surprised it's quicker than that mx5, it did really well down here too, and nobody knows how much of a weapon these cars are in NZ (except for the enthusiasts). How's the drive compared to your 172? I'm considering getting another Clio if at all possible.

  182 trackcar, XC60t6
182 definitely faster but then it is stripped out with sticky tyres. The 172 is looking mint with your old rims and sportlines.

Good to see the wee car getting a workout ... absolutely champing at the bit to get mine back ... the build is almost 10 months now! How much weight have you taken out of it? With (at best 210bhp), shedding the shell has been a focus. That said, I could lose 15kgs!
