Smeatharpe Rally Test/Autosolo

'lo.

Popped up to Smeatharpe today. Race car's not back on the road yet so no actual driving, so I took my camera instead to try and get used to it. First time shooting moving cars, and I need to use a bit more aperture with this lens I think as the AF doesn't really focus accurately a lot of the time. Had fun though although I went home half way through the day due to impending frostbite. Enjoy, and yes, they are both Ex WRC Imprezas.

What do you mean you need to use more aperture?
The af will be the same if you shoot at f1.8 or f22. It's the camera body, or maybe the lens, that will have the issues with the focus, it just won't be quick enough.

What you need to do is shoot Shutter priority if you want to pan and use one af point on your camera (or a small cluster if possible, not sure what Nikon offer in af grouping) maybe 100th of a second give or take.

Some nice shots though.

With the Sigma it tends to focus a little short or a little long, it's not very precise on the lens side of things, which you'd expect for £90. So by having a deeper depth of field it means that the car will fall somewhere within the focused area, and to do that you need mo' aperture. Unless I'm missing something.

Theoretically, yes it should but it still might miss focus due to being a cheaper lens.
Might increase the keep rate though so definitely worth trying out.

Maybe worth trying manual focus (if you know they should be hitting a certain spot)
