Where is the oil level sensor and oil pressure switch on a 172ff ?

I have asked this before with no luck...

I have a oilemperature gauge and an oil pressure gauge to fit to my car.

I have ordered and received a sandwich plate and it is of no use http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=227874&page=2&highlight=oil+pressure

So i was wandering if anyone know where the oil pressure sensor/switch is on a 2002 172ff ?

As i was gonna buy a t piece and tap into that for the oil pressure gauge and tap into the oil level sensor for the oil temperature gauge ;)

What are these sensors/senders for ? ?

I have a few pictures of sensors/senders below.

Does anyone know which is which ?

Is this the Knock Sensor ? (It has a brown coloured bit on it - and it has two wires going into its multi plug connector )

Is this th Oil pressure sensor ? (It has a green coloured bit on it - and it has one single wire going into its multi plug connector)

And lastly is this the Oil level sensor/sender (The one that senses the oil level and displays "OIL OK" on the mileage display on start up some times) - and it has two wires going into its multi plug connector

Does anyone know if i'll lose uch oil if i remove any of these to check the threads to get a t-piece ?

yep yep and yep.

and nope.
just a drip or 2

Ok cheers mate ;)

Don't supose you know if the oil pressure sensor is the one for low oil pressure or high oil pressure ?

As i disconnected the multiplug connector then started the engine to see if the oil light came on on my dashboard and it didn't. :S

And has the oil level sensor got a probe attached to it to take the oil level ?

one more thing. The pressure sensor, is a pressure switch IIRC??
it's for warning light purposes, not gauge compatible?

Let me know if you manage to get a T piece in any of those mate :)

I was just wanting to take that out (the pressure switch), put a t piece in its place so i can refit it (the pressure switch) and attach the elsectronic oil pressure sensor for my oil pressure gauge to the t piece.

And voila one working oil pressure gauge :)

Would that work ?

And if the oil level sensor has no probe on the end of it, i was gonna put a t piece into that as well and attach the electronic sensor for my oil temperature gauge to it ;)

hmmm, Im no expert on these TBH mate. I don't know whether or not a T piece would affect the function of the standard pressure switch although i should think it would.
I can't see how an electronic dipstick would work without a probe tbh???
IMO, loose the pressure switch and go for temp and pressure.

I'm also interested in doing this, So PLEASE write a simple guide if you get it working, that'd be cool.

can somebody explain the knock sensor to me? is it supposed to sens dieseling/pinking and r****d the timing?

iF IT'LL AFFECT THE OPERATION OF MY OIL PRESSURE SWITCH I'D BE BETTER TO LEAVE IT :)

Bloody Caps Lock :(

I'd run just a oil temperature and oil pressure gauge in replacement but don't know what the normal oil pressure is meant to be :S So i'd be none the wiser if the pressure dropped or increased :(

So i may have to lose the oil level sensor if i want to run gauges :(

Re: oil pressure guage buying help needed
you dont need an expensive sandwhich plate for a pressure sender, just Tee off the low pressure warning sender in the block.

If found my answer here from Ben R in this thread
http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=161692&highlight=oil+pressure+sender :)

So here i go, i'll have a go at removing my oil pressure sensor tomorrow and get a t piece for it :)

Ah righty.

Don't suppose anyone knows the price of a new sensor ?

As i've heard there prone to break on removal :(

yeah the switch in its static state joins the two wires if you like then as soon as it sees pressure it disconnects the two

ie if you earth the wire going to it the light will come on

if i had to choose i'd rather a gauge, as the oil pressure switch will sometimes let oil pressure get to as low as 5 psi before it will come on which by then will already have done damage

Interested in the thread info for the oil pressure switch, as i need to wire up my oil pressure guage.... dunno why they got rid of them in the mk2, one of the best guages in the mk1!

Cheers bud, same here i'd rather have a gauge than the light but my gauge seems to read 10ish psi on tickover with the oil temp at 80 degrees c :S

I left the engine idling for a good while as i wanted to see how high the oil temp gauge went up ;)

And on start up from cold the oil pressure hovers around 70-80 psi until it warms up to about 50 degress c then the pressure creeps down as the oil get warmer and thinner i guess.

Is this ok ?

Ok cheers bud:)

What do you's guys think i should do.

I've just been thinking.

SHOULD I ATTACH ANOTHER T PIECE TO THE ONE I HAVE TO RUN THE STANDARD OIL PRESSURE SWITCH/SENDER ?

OR LEAVE IT WITH THE OIL GAUGES ON THERE OWN ?

Aggh f**king caps lock :(

I'm planning to put in a t-piece with both attached

Reason is, although the oil pressure guage is more useful, I'd be far more likely to notice a big red light on the dash than if the gauge were to drop to 0...

the gauge is sometimes hidden by the steering wheel, based on how you're sitting :D and you don't always look at the aux gauges...

(based on a 172 in a mk1 16v)

my oil pressure sender should arrive tomorrow, should be a laugh seeing how much (little?) pressure it makes :D

Thats what i thought.

Are you fitting an Oil Temperature as well ?

Or just an Oil Pressure Gauge ?

I've fitted oil level and temperature already, but I've used the mk1 sender (which does both) into where the mk2 sender for the oil temp goes

very trick gauges to have! :D

They look 100 times better than mine as yours are part of the dash :)

I have my gauges in a triple gauge pod inside my glovebox out the way as i couldn't think where to mount them as there to big to place on the top of the dash like Gdi's ones.

And i didn't want a pillar gauge pod after even ordering one and trying it in place :( (Thats another reason why i need to refit the pressure switch/sensor :))

God knows why Renault never fitted them as standard in the 172 :(

My girlfreind has a bloody oil temp gauge on her dash on a 206 Quicksilver (Why??:S )

What is your oil temp in ?

Fahrenheit instead of degrees c

P.s Is it just me or is the top half of your dash meant to be a different colour ?

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
oil temp is in deg c (the 'F' like symbol is the 'temperature' symbol)

top dash is black, bottom bit is grey - standard

should all be black imo
