Clio RS 200 - Age 21 - Insurance - MakerStudy???

  Renault Clio RS 200
Hi,

So recently I have been calling every insurance company I know and will list the outcomes below.

I’m 21 ,3 years driving, 3 years NCB

I have had some good quotes but all have issues and I am wanting to know if I should go with one.

Green Light - can’t Insure

Sky Insurance - £1260 (with mods) but it MarkerStudy? Any good?

HIC - £1180 (exhaust mod, but need to be done in 1 month, might not happen)

Brentacre - £1690 (with mods)

These are the best I have had, I’ve tried all companies I’ve seen on forums etc so my question is...

Is it worth going with Sky Insurance with the MarkerStudy as underwriters, it’s a good price but I’ve just not seen anyone say a good thing about them when they have to make a claim?

Has anyone here got any successful claims through MarkerStudy, should I go with them or not?

Thanks

When you say, with mods ? What mods ?

I've been MarkerStudy in the past through someone else. |It never bothered me as I never had to claim.

Strange that Sky with MarkerStudy will allow you, but Greenlight who also use MarkerStudy (I know because that's currently my combo) won't allow you.

MarkerStudy is LV, they're pretty good as insurers go.

Have you tried everyone? A-Plan, Chris Knott, Warmans etc... the obscure ones.

I went with Sky insurance as they were the only ones who gave me a sensible quote when I was 21 with 3 years NCB too. Had no issues and the chap on the phone was pleasant to speak to aswell. Can't really help anymore than that, sorry!

IIRC my research on Markerstudy a little while ago only brought up appalling reviews, but as noted above, they have apparently been bought-out by LV recently so I'm hoping that they have improved.

Who is the quote with HIC and Brentacre with? It's probably also Markerstudy - there really aren't that many underwriters out there from what I can tell, but there are plenty of brokers putting business through them.

All the cars I've ever owned have been so low in value that I would never claim for a Fault accident and would just buy another car, so ultimately I guess I just go for the cheapest insurance and be done with, and if some poor b*****d has to deal with them during a claim I'm involved in, it's not anything I have to worry about... lol

I was with MarkerStudy through Greenlight when I made a claim back in 2016, didn’t have any problems with them. They were fairy decent about the value although it was a fairy unique spec so they based it around what I paid a year earlier.

I haven’t made any other claims to compare them against but I certainly didn’t have a problem.

I bought my 200 brand new for my 21st, insurance was £700 fully comp back then with 1 year NCB. I think that was admiral

Have you got a bad area for crime etc?

Highway (also LV?) had atrocious reviews previously, yet on my claim through them/Greenlight was faultless.

Exhaust Mods is the one I've been listing, but it seems to bring back same price for all the companies I've spoken to regardless of what mods are on there

Not tried A-Plan yet, about to call them up though, Chris Knott won't insure me, Warmans I will also check.

Did not know MarketStudy was LV, is this stated anywhere do you know???

Greenlight said I would have need 1 year driving something 150BHP or more, which I dont :(

Do you actually have any modifications?

Greenlight and sky insurance have always quoted too much for me. I’ve used Brentacre, Chris Knott, AXA and now with with Adrian Flux.

Check with the insurers mentioned above and most will also price match. Worth checking with admiral/elephant/bell?

Both HIC and Brentacre have gave me quotes using Highway, which I believe is also LV?

No mods currently, but would like to be covered in case I get some, which is most likely. Will try the other companies now and feed back :)

Can you insure it anywhere without mods ?

i.e.: if all you're doing is changing the exhaust.. then don't bother...?

Where do you live !?

Cheapest without mods is Hastings at around £850-950 hence why for an extra £200 im now looking at getting a insurance that covers mods. I originally though it would be like £1000 more :L

Finally someone who has had success! How long did the claim take and what was it for if you don't mind me asking?

Sod that. Drive it for a year, go with Greenlight in a year and you'll be sorted.

They're hardly naff to drive standard !!

Changing exhaust ruins them anyway, unless they sorted out the god awful flatspot issue on the 200 over the 197 ?!

£200+ extra for an exhaust (that you haven't bought yet) is hilarious... get another years NCD, some experience with "fast" cars and put that towards something more useful.

Do you have a website or contact for Warmans? Aplan closed at 5:00pm :(

Ah yes!

That's who I was racking my brains for when I was typing my post, and in fact who I was thinking of - Highway used to be f**king terrible, which is why I have previously asked a broker specifically to not go with them, but they had indeed been bought by LV the last time I looked at it.

If Markerstudy have also been bought-up by LV, that is new news, and kind of concerns me in that LV would be trying to entirely corner the 'bottom end' of the insurance market, where all mods are covered by (likely) getting a good payout is a PITA...

Claim was settled pretty quick, but there was no doubt of my liability and the car was an obvious write off unfortunately, I managed to take down a lamppost all on my own. It was sorted within about 2 weeks as far as I remember.

THIS X100! Correct

If the cars not modified already I'd take the cheapest quote and enjoy if as is for a year. Then put that saving towards more mods for next year. Patience is a virtue and all that.

  Renault Clio RS 200
Thanks for all the responses, I guess I'm not to worried about going with MarkerStudy now unless anyone else knows otherwise?

I might go with hastings with it stock for a year, the only thing is... is it not worth getting an insurance that covers mods anyway if its only £150 - £200 more than having it stock?

No, I’d rather stick that £200 on fuel than just for the sake of having modified insurance.

The 200 is loud enough standard, and even if you think it isn’t - I’d wait 12 months and you’ll appreciate a performance exhaust more. Put that 200 into a better exhaust in 12 months.

Yeah fair enough, I will run it a year then I think then I can make sure everything is fine with the car, and get used to it. Only been driving a 1.4 C2 ?

Might be able to call Hastings for a cheaper quote as well as I've been with them the last 2 Years. Only issue is they quote on the age you are when getting the quote so I have to call up on my birthday when I'm 21 in 2 weeks.

Then I should be able to get with Greenlight or Brentacre for a better price

If you’ve come from a 1.4 - then the 200 will be more than entertaining as standard.

All I can advise is, look after it. If you drive it recklessly, the gearbox WILL throw a bill at you. Put that £200 towards maintenance bits. Like brake pads/discs.
Or make sure the cars for matching quality tyres all around.

If your that keen on wanting a louder exhaust, just chop the middle box out of the standard exhaust for £40.

Thanks for the tips,

Already got full set of front and read discs and pads coming as the back ones are graunchy and make a horrible noise. Tyres will be next, any recommendations?

Exhaust like you said would be for a nice sporty sound on the outside mainly and a bit louder, would be my first modified car so I'm really wanting to at least do an exhaust mod for the first time.

Unrelated... but do you know if the standard exhaust can be removed and then re-installed if needs be?

Standard exhaust is a full length pipe, from the front to rear, they’re fitted before the rear beam goes on, so once you take (you have to cut it off) it off, you’d have to weld it back on in sections.

So if your refering to putting a performance one on and putting the standard one back on if there’s any insurance issues, they could see the exhaust has been taken off at some point.

Obviously they’re not new cars anymore, so it’s easy to argue the original exhaust had failed, but I’m just highlighting that you would see that the exhaust has been taken off, at some point.

No it wasn’t for insurance, I’ll be declaring mods if I mod the car but when I am with a modified car insurance company. I was just wondering to see if it’s worth keeping the original exhaust really

I'd pay the extra for modified car insurance because as much as you want to believe you won't want to modify it, trust me you will. Anyone who says otherwise is probably an OAP or broke ?

Get yourself to CSF, get a passenger band and some nice folk will take you out for a few laps. You might even get to hear some 197 aftermarket exhausts to help you choose which you prefer.

Yeah, I totally get you, I have 2 frames of mind. Get insurance which is potentially hard to claim with but can mod, or wait a year then go with greenlight or another insurance with a better underwriter. I’m just unsure about MarkerStudy ?

The only worry I have it I would like a sports cat and resonated cat back from cobra, fairly local to me. Just don’t know if either of these will create a flat spot?
