Squeaking/Chirping - Driver Side Wheel - Extremely Annoying

  Renault Clio RS 200
I am now getting very annoyed at this issue on my Clio RS 200 I’ve been driving for 2-3 months now.

3 weeks ago I did my first long drive and noticed when I had the window down that there was a squeaking/chirping noise coming from my front right driver side wheel. First impression was it will be the breaks or the tyre.

Now every time I drive the car and only when the car has warmed up after 10-20 minutes of driving this noise will happen when going 10 - 40mph. It is at the point where I can hear it with the windows up.

We have tried jacking it up after a 15 minute drive and the noise occurs when spinning the wheel. The wheel spins freely and the breaks are not making the noise. (I have recently had all new discs and pads as well) it also can’t be the tyre as the noise happens when the wheel spins and it is jacked up.

Could anyone please give me any ideas or if anyone has had this issue and how you got it sorted. The noise drives my crazy!

Does it happen all the time or only when cornering? Could be a dry driveshaft CV joint if the latter?

The only other things I can think of that moves and could create a rotational noise would be a wheelbearing, or if, perhaps, the nuts/studs are too far in and touching the hub when they have warmed up and expanded?

The noise will happen most of the time when warm, does it when going straight and turning. The noise comes on after around 15 mins of driving. Thanks for the response

Does it only happen while driving? It could be something as simple as a disconnected hand brake cable rubbing on the tyre?

If it happens once it's warmed up and continues when stationary and/or when increasing the revs in neutral, it could be a worn fan belt or wobbly pulley? You can test this by spraying the fan belt lightly with water (both on the top and bottom side of the belt) and see if the noise gets worse or goes away.

Just a few thoughts worth checking.

Thanks for the input Alzatar...

The noise happens when driving, or only when the right wheel is spinning. Such as if i turn off the car, jack it up and spin the front right wheel I can recreate the noise. But after around 40 - 60 seconds when the wheel cools down the noise goes away and can't be recreated until it is warm again and been driven. We litteraly have to pit stop the car and quickly jack it up to hear the noise for 60 seconds.

Don't think it will be a belt as it occurs when the wheel is span individually. Cam belt has recently been done anyway, got 55k miles on the clock.

Ah fair enough, I did mean the pullies and tensioners and the belt connected to them opposed to the cambelt, but it sounds like that's not your issue anyway. If it's the front tyre then it won't be a disconnected handbrake cable either. Actually... it might be worth seeing if it's your power steering pump? I know that can make a similar noise and if its the pully then it would increase under load too.

I would definitely follow up with what 'White16valver' said and check out if it's coming from the CV joint and other suggestions. The best car fixing channel I've come across on youtube is a guy called 'ChrisFix' and I believe he has a video on the CV and how to sort it with common hand tools.

Thanks, I will take a look. Any other suggestions are welcome as well as it’s really ******* me off

Another quick thought, could be the ball joint too. I guess just have to get your ear right in there to figure out which component it is. Good luck!

Yep, I’d be doing that but the noise stops when the car has cooled around a minute, have to try and get wheel off like an F1 pit team ? will try anyway. Need to try and spin it without the wheel on

Just though I would update this for others to benefit from and anyone that’s Interested.

After me and my dad taking the car out and taking it to his garage we sprayed WD40 on the Drive Shaft Support Bearing which can be done if you take a front wheel off and jack up the car but easier if on a ramp obviously.

The squeak was occurring all the time after 5 mins of driving and when going around 10-30 mph.

After spraying DW40 on the Drive Shaft Support Bearing I have not heard the squeak again as of yet. So hopefully this has sorted the issue, if not then it looks like I will be replacing or re-spraying WD40 if the squeak returns.

Okay the squeak has returns and I’ve just had the following work done and still no difference. I’ve been to a specialist and I’m out of options now!

The chirping noise is still there after driving for around 10 mins and the car has warmed up.

Had the CV boot changes and drive shaft support bearing.

Also had a lower swivel joint replaced as it was gone.

Any ideas anyone what could be causing this noise?

Yep I have thought this as well, buts it’s not the usual drony bearing noise. It like a chirping bird is stuck in the wheel. Could this still be a wheel bearing?

Yeah I had that. Sprayed a bit of white grease of the back of the bearing and it stopped momentarily.

Literally sounded like some song birds so it's familiar to my issue.

Took the hub off and the wheel bearing was shot, properly grinding sound but no drone.

Yep sounds very much like mine, im going to get the wheel bearing on front driver side changed then anyway, can’t hurt to replace the bearing anyway

Update - okay so it looks like this issue is now sorted!!!

I got the wheel bearing changed on the front driver side wheel we’re the chirp was coming from and it has not chirped since.

My mechanic said there was nothing wrong with the old bearing but it was possibly a bit tight. So if anyone else has this issue it could be the wheel bearing!!!

So relieved that this is sorted now

Nice - glad you got it sorted.

Thanks for updating with the solution!
