Clio 172 Turbo - Gearbox options?

So my gearbox is now making fighting noises, and has clearly had enough of being abused by the turbo.

Other than another 129 gearbox, what other replacement options are there?

I seem to recall some boosted clios' with gearboxes from DCi clios? but I think they were running more power than mine, which is circa 250hp

Any help appreciated as always

The dci boxes have shite ratios and are also no stronger than the 129.

It’s the torque that kills the jc5 unfortunately. The only way to not kill them is run decent oil and change it regularly.

The only potential option in terms of jc5 is to get the 089. They have taper bearings on the input shaft and the mainshaft and imo, make the box a bit more resistant to flex/twist.

I’d imagine the mainshaft bearing is the cause of your noise as well. They suffer the most wear/abuse in the jc5’s. And the worse they get, the more chance you have of it eating through the bellhousing and losing your oil.

Final option is to fit the VAG box, but you need custom flywheel, bellhousing adapter, box and mounts. Bit of faff with the selector lever as they’re cable operated.

If you can get your jc5 out I can have a look at sorting it mate 👍🏻

Thanks for the quick answers!

I think the box is toast tbh. I've had to limp home 15 miles or so and its making some truly frightening noises, especially in 5th when it grinds and judder. I very quickly went back to 4th and nursed it home.

I took a quick video, it's a bit quite but you csn hear the issue 😳

I've spotted this on fleabay and wondered if this was a potential quick solution:

Lolololol yeah that sounds pretty unhappy doesn’t it 😂 deffo sounds mainshaft bearing.

Does your car run a speedo? If it does, then that box *should work, but quite why they’ve listed a jb3 box up as a 182 gearbox is beyond me!

I'll be getting under it as soon as it stops chucking it down lol.

Will drop the oil, as you say.

It's making that noise whilst rolling, either in gear, out of gear or with the clutch in.

When I engage 5th, it crunches in and gets very judder (almost feels like it's jamming against something if that makes any sense?)

I'll drop the oil as you suggest, and see what it's like......I'm expecting bits of metal to come out 🙈

Yeah that’s the mainshaft bearing has failed mate and allowing it to move around - there will be metallic particles in the oil. Guaranteed lol

You're right. The oil is somewhat more sparkly than it should be.

The question is, is it repairable and if it is, is it more cost effective to repair or buy a reasonable used box? 🤔

Well generally 9 times out of 10 they’re repairable. The only time they’re not is when it’s damaged the casing and allows the oil to come through into the clutch housing.

I’ve got plenty of spares to help keep costs down as well 👍🏻

Rough cost?

I've also got a weepy seal on the drivers side half shaft thing. It's been replaced twice but still weeps.

This box hates life right now

Well that’s no bother to sort mate either way.

Where abouts are you? I'm in Southampton.
I’m Lichfield Staffordshire, so midlands basically. If you can box it up, you can get it delivered for about £40 using the ups option on interparcel. Just have to put it down as car parts! Put it down as a gearbox and they’ll refuse to take it lol

I’ve done a nice job blowing up mine and I’m looking for an informed person to help! My local gearbox guy isn’t being too helpful. @NorthloopCup would you be interested in rebuilding gearbox shipped from Dublin? Thanks!

If the shipping costs don't kill you, I cannot recommend @NorthloopCup highly enough.

It's comforting to know that as these cars get older, that there's someone who knows these gearboxes (literally) inside and out.

Parts might become like unicorns to obtain, but at least the knowledge will be here for many more years yet.

Hopefully.... ;)
