Belts and service before selling?

I'm thinking of selling my 182 and moving to pastures new.

It's a good example. Not mint by any means, but well looked after with a mostly complete service history. It's high mileage at 150,000 but I think it wears it well.

Anyway, it's due for the cambelt, aux belt, dephaser service this year and I'm weighing up whether it's worth doing before I sell. Obviously I'll get more for it if I do, but will I recoup the price of the service? Or, if it were your money, would you prefer to buy a car that needed the work and then get it done at your own specialist?

If you’re getting the belts done at a known reputable specialist, it’s worth doing as you can ask a premium.
If you’re planning on doing it yourself or a mate doing it, you’ll see no benefit from a financial point of view.

As somebody who is in the market for a 182, I am only looking at ones that have had Belts done (recently) by a Specialist. It makes me think the car has been looked after by somebody that knows & cares about these cars.

This may not necessarily hold true, but it is a peace-of-mind thing for me as a buyer.

I sold it to him without doing the belts and he's subsequently had Mick at Diamond do them a few months back.


As somebody who is in the market for a 182, I am only looking at ones that have had Belts done (recently) by a Specialist. It makes me think the car has been looked after by somebody that knows & cares about these cars.

This may not necessarily hold true, but it is a peace-of-mind thing for me as a buyer.

Slightly contrary to my previous comment... but I wish I didn't know the price you had sold it for in October 😅

Out of interest what's the going rate for belts, dephaser, water pump, aux belt now ?

Given the milage I would sell without the belts. That's probably more likely to be the sort of car people are buying for a cheap toy rather than people looking for a minter/investment etc (no disrespect to your car, I'm sure it's as good as you say) that then leaves it open to people looking for a cheaper car or for people to do the belts themself or use a garage of their choice.

Main reason people want one with the belts done is because it's a better deal for them than having to pay to have them done, that would suggest it's a worse deal for the seller, financially, but may be easier to sell...

It's well expensive now for a specialist to do belts and on that mileage I'd make a guess that you're not going to be demanding top money, so I'd say leave them as you won't make the money back selling it with them done imo.

Same, i always buy cars that need work doing, then do it myself, know its been done properly then.
Also an ideal opportunity to plonk some cams in if thats your thing.
Funnily enough, i was looking back through some old spreadsheets earlier on, used to sell 1*2 engines for £2-300 lol.
Back in the day it was cheaper to just put another engine in than get the belts done :ROFLMAO:

We all want to buy a car needed belts, because it’s likely cheaper and after the belts are sorted worth more money.

You know if I’m buying a car needing belts I’m offering peanuts and so are you guys. Dealers will smell blood in the water, they offer £1000 for a £3000-3500 car.

Everyone wants a profit, a belt needing car attracts dealers and car tinkerers..

cheap cars attract cheap people or car bro’s.

Hence, do the belts, change the oil and filter, maximum peace of mind for the buyer. Ask more money, add the doom and gloom belts information to the advert and they won’t want any of the cheaper cars needing belts.

I'll be listing on here shortly — I'd prefer it to go to an enthusiast as it's a good car. If I don't get any interest I may look at getting the work done and selling elsewhere.

Agree with the middle part of that, but even with belts done, you aint getting £3k-3.5k for a clio on 150k miles, unless something like LY, PB etc.

Just list without doing the belts and adjust the price by £1,000. These cars have more issues to be concerned with than just the belts.

But I agree with @The Crumb Master in that if you're going to do it, get a proper reputable specialist like AW Motorworks, Mick at Diamond, Beaniesport et-al to do it and it'll no doubt add a bit of value. Not one of these fly-by-nights purporting to be specialists. Ask me how I know.

bought my cup cheap because it was due belts etc, was priced cheap due to work needing done. i was happy as i had it booked it straight away with a specialist for all the work to be done. im sure it will sell as is if its a nice car and price factored accordingly.
