I can feel that the Gripper is letting me put a whole lot more load through the transmission, as I can get on the acceleartor so much earlier in the corners. A lot of the time I am accelerating against the tyre angle, pushing them across the tarmac, which must load back through the transmission...
Thanks for the reply.
I can only assume the LUK clutch was a complete kit, as it was fitted by a garage, but being the first replacement on the car I guess that anything re-used would have an OEM Valeo marking, but it was all LUK
The current failure is a complete Valeo kit from...
No @Touring_Rob the clutch pedal is up, cable attached, I'm not pulling the fork back or anything........so I think you are onto something here!
I think the bearing has pushed or ground itself into the spring fingers, the cable ratchet has self adjusted so I still get the fork travel, but all...
PS. Maybe a silly question, but could the lightweight flywheel be anything to do with it?
If for some reason it was thicker, or sat a few millimetres closer to the gearbox, would it effectively cause overtravel of the fork, forcing the bearing too far into the springs?
Given that the fork...
The old LUK plate had written on it 'gearbox side', the new valeo one didn't have anything written on it, but the two sides were obviously different and pretty much identical to the LUK one, so i fitted it the same way round. The 'gearbox side' sticks out a bit more than the flywheel side, so...
Certainly looks like something there.
I've got one of those magnets on an extendable aerial type thing, so in the morning I see if I can get it in there and pick anything up.
Where could it be coming from, the bearing grinding on the spring fingers or something?
The bearing was the new one that came with the valeo kit.
As for fitting correctly, I think so, but could easily have cocked something up! From memory:
Having fitted the clutch and removed the plastic alignment tool I greased the gearbox shaft sleeve with the grease that came with the kit. The...
Many thanks for the confirmation.
Unfortunately no time this week to take the gearbox out, but should get onto it at the weekend. I'm a bit intrigued as to what I might find.
Help! Update after Lydden Hill trackday yesterday:
Absolutely fine for 3 sessions, approximately 45 track miles, and only 90 downchanges and upchanges.
Downchanges from 3rd to 2nd braking from 90mph to 45, and 70 to 30
Then just the same as before, after a downchange suddendly unable to select...
Many thanks for the replies, PMS confirmed that it doesn't do much and you could even leave it out.
I put the old one back in, this was during gearbox out for a clutch change, and now it's got to come out again as the clutch has gone again.
Not a fun job!
Really useful thread many thanks @JamesBryan, highlighted an error I'd made at the offside rear in using shims to add negative camber I'd also added massive toe-in! My mistake in the combination of shims and easily rectified, but the string alignment method has saved me about £100 in identifying...
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the climate control unit, in particular the outputs to the heater mixer flap motor, and the air distribution flap motor.
Looks like the controller has failed, and being a track only car I don't need the climate control, and the aircon has been deleted...
Another one with a Minno Max trailer and a 182 weighing about 960kg
I've had no problems driving the car on, you have to splay the ramps out a bit, but on the trailer there are couple of inches clearance each side which should be all you need.
Winching it on is fairly easy too. (I have standard...
Just thought I'd better check the invoice again, but yes it was 7.25hrs at £64 per hour plus VAT!
That was a complete gearbox swap, but I can't see that being much more work than a clutch change.
I guess the 7.25 hours might be the book rate for a gearbox change rather than actual time.
As I...
I have just fitted a genune renault Valeo clutch kit, bought from @renaultpartsdirect at £180
It was to replace the LUK clutch which had failed with a broken cover plate. More details in this thread https://cliosport.net/threads/clutch-damage.834440/
I decided to do the job myself as I have...
Many thatnks for the help all.
Everything back together and no nuts or bolts left over, always a good sign.
Tested fine with a short trip up the road, no issues with the gearchange after warming up and hard braking as before.
Can't test it too much on the road, as the car has numberplates...
The genuine Valeo should arrive tomorrow, so with any luck I should be able to give it a test sometime at the weekend.
The LUK clutch is way cheaper, so I'm hoping that has something to do with the failure.
When it was first fitted the feel of the biting point almost disappeared, but I'm putting...
Given that the damage is at the top 2 holes where the flywheel stopped, I am now concerned that I might have caused this damage in removing the gearbox.
The box was supported on rolling Jack's the whole time, but was a bit difficult to pull away from the locating stud on the front.
If the end...
Many thanks for the reply
Yes all bolts were equally tight, or definitely not noticeably loose when I took the clutch out.
These were the top 2, if that is any relevamce.
Generally only me who drives the car, just on track now. Historically I've been pretty light on clutches, the car is...
I like that illustration, although I'm reasonably mechanically minded I struggle to retain how all the components of a clutch interact....and if we move on to LSDs then I really get a headache.
Looking at that illustration I would have thought the force of the realease bearing does exert...
Thanks for the comprehensive reply Rob,
I reckon you're right in that the clutch damage and mounts are not related. I went down that path thinking the difficulty in changing gear was down to the engine moving in relation to the gear selector, and I got stuck in that mindset.
Before I took the...
Many thanks for the reply Rob.
I must admit I couldn't make the connection between the two, but on track I suddenly couldn't change gear when braking heavily and on investigation found some loose bolts on the pure motorsport engine and gearbox mounts. But having tightened everything up and...
Does anyone have PMS engine/gearbox mounts on a 182.
They say it is a complete set: engine suspended mount, gearbox suspended mount and gearbox lower rear mount/dogbone.
However there doesn't appear to be a replacement for this mount on the lower front of the gearbox, photo taken from nearside...
Could running without the little single wire control/battery light connector damage an alternator?
Alternatively (no pun intended)
Could being covered in power steering fluid damage an alternator?
In a non road legal track car with no AC, radio etc and only using lights in a wet race for 15-20...
This should help: https://www.pure-motorsport.co.uk/media/wysiwyg/images/fitting_guides/Camber_shims_instructions.pdf
57nm for the M10s
29nm for the M8s
If it's mainly a road car I guess you would risk wearing out the inside edges of your rear tyres more quickly, and I wouldn't have thought any gain in cornering performance would be worth it. Better maybe to replace worn bushes and upgrade the dampers instead.
I fitted the shims to get just over a degree of negative camber on the rears. (The fronts have 3 degrss OS and 2 degrees NS)
Unfortunatley the following race in October was a wash out, the rain and poor choice of tyres meant no useful information.
Now we have been able to take the car on track...
Hi Tom,
No I still have the 4 new 595 RSR Pros unused, covered and dry in the garage!
Only thing I've done in the Clio this year is a trackday at Lydden just before the lockdown, and I was trying to kill the Yokos that still refuse to die, despite about 5 coats of tyre softener!
Hopefully I'll...
