Point worth noting, when I first did my steering column I used a single UJ, it looked and felt like it was working fine but, the steering output was far from linear.
I set up a protractor on the end of the column and turned the column through 20deg increments, measuring how far the rack extended...
It says in the installation manual they have to be installed with the feed at the bottom, or at least the diagrams show the pipework configured like that.
I bought a wee pipe bender on ebay that does various sizes, 3/16 for my brake pipes, and it also does 5/16 which was perfect for bending this...
Looking good, nice to know someone with machining facilities like that!
One point however, the fire extinguisher nozzles in the engine bay arent installed the way they're supposed to be.
You need to feed the T-piece from the bottom, not side entry, as it is just now the rear nozzles will not...
Looking good mate, few bits look familiar ;)
The last time I looked all cap head bolts where at least 8.8 tensile so those bolts should be strong enough, iirc MSA regs only call for 8.8 tensile as a minimum, you can chose to go higher if you want obviously.
One thing I would do though, i'm...
Excellent result!!
Engine sounds really strong, ill probably have to make so with a standard one for a while but to coin a phrase " I got to get me one of those"
Cheers for the comments and interest in the rack bushes.
I have said to the machine shop that I would probably take about 6 sets initially so it looks like I'm just about there. When he gets back to me with pricing based on that number I'll see where we are and how many more folk are...
Re: Nylon steering rack bushes
Not really an update as such, just trying to gauge interest in this.
Ive spoken to R-Sport and they seem to think the race cars just ran the standard rubber sleeves.
If I can get an idea of how many folk would potentially be interested in some nylon rack...
Looking good James!
I managed to get most of the weight out the standard dash, perhaps not quite as light as a MK1 dash top but at least it fits the car properly and gives you a useable thing to mount stuff on. Most of the weight is on the passenger airbag bit, get your self some 40 grit flap...
You've certainly been busy.
Plenty scope to adjust bumpsteer now! Who did you get to weld the brackets onto the uprights? Assume it welded ok? pre-heated and cooled slowly?
One point on the gearbox mounting, that is now unquestionably the stiffest mounting on the engine&gearbox as such it will...
Trying to recover the seats would be my first plan, the other thing you could consider is flipping the calipers round. You would obviously still need to get the seats to seal up but if you turned them upside down, swapped Left to Right, Right to Left and then moved the balance pipes to where the...
That seems a bit extreme, surely you can't just write off a pair of calipers because the seats for the bleed nipples are a bit damaged!? Did they not even mention the possibility of refacing the seats?
Have you got any pictures of the calipers handy?
I dont know specifically about the Alcons or the the issues they may have but all you can do is get a good look at the seat area and see if it looks galled up, there may also be witness marks on the bleed nipple to give you some clues as to what's going on. If the seat is damaged I should...
Not really a huge amount to show but there's been quite a lot of progress on various things.
Electrics:
I've finally finished the wiring diagrams for the ECU and the other car related stuff. Also made up termination diagrams for the various connectors so it should make assembling it all pretty...
I would need to look up the blue book again but I seem to recall that the fuel tank/system needs to be separated from the driver by means of a fluid tight bulkhead, doesn't need to be fireproof, just has to be able to stop petrol pouring all over you in the event of an accident which ruptures...
Hmm, it is of course entirely up to you but for all the time it takes I would get them taken out, a window company will do remove and refit for a reasonable fee. Another point to note, the tubes directly behind the windows are the bits your going to see when you look in said window, if you don't...
Just a thought but is this not worthy of its own thread?
Good progress though, are you taking the windows out before you paint the inside? Make life a whole lot easier.
That's seen some pretty severe detonation! The other piston looks like its showing some signs of detonation too. What do the plugs look like? What ecu is it running? Obviously not been monitoring knock.
Have a look at 3M PPS system, gravity fed but the cups basically colapse in on themselves as the paint is drawn from them so they dont die out on you.
You will probably need a mini gravity fed gun too, certain bits you will struggle with no matter what you use.
Going from black to white will...
In a standard road car, that may be the intended purpose of that reinforcement.
In a car with a proper cage however, especially if its tied into the strut towers, I would say it's perfectly safe to remove. If you have a head on that's bad enough to bend the cage and bring the pedals into the...
Yeah something like that, going back to standard subframe meant the rack was lower than when I made the column, didnt think it would have made that much of a difference to the angles etc but it did. Nearly sorted now though.
What are you doing with the column on yours?
