1/2 is fine for steel, it patterns really tightly anyway so you don't lose anything. I shoot steel through 1/4 and 1/2 int he DT10 and it's been absolutely fine. If you're doing a fair bit of fowling I would look at picking up a cheap/modern 12g like a hatsan escort pump for the price a few...
