Place it in saucepan full of water, bring it up to boil and check for movement is a rough way. However, I wouldn't bother since the symptoms you've already described indicate towards a faulty thermostat! I had the same problem on my Cup; replaced it (only cost £13 for the part) and the needle on...
RE51 WPV - obviously one to avoid like the plague if it ever survives long enough to be put up for sale.
Absolutely disgraceful driving!
Well no actually....
I've seen this on a few occasions, most recently today at around 17:50 near the Shell petrol station (just off the outer ring road, right next to Tuckswood) on the Ipswich Road. Reg starts with HK54 if I remember correctly!
Mine's an 03. Clear side repeaters and the keyhole is on the passenger door only! Standard cup interior though, which has done my back in on some long journeys....
You'll notice a change in drivabilty too (unless the sensor's always been knackered in your ownership).
Just another thought - checked your tyre pressures recently?

Took me very little time to find that thread - see a few posts down
By front end I'm assuming you mean the bulkhead? It's usually the lower gearbox 'dogbone' mount, but it'd be worth checking the other engine mounts for wear too (upper driver's side engine mount and lower gearbox mount).
The nearside CV boot securing band decided to break recently, so I cleaned everything up (unsealed boot obviously results in a bit of grease oozing out), added fresh CV grease and fitted a new band.
The needle on the temperature gauge should sit at the middle bar once up to temperature and stay there. I suspected a faulty thermostat when my the needle on my 172's gauge would only wind up to 1 bar below the middle bar, and it tended to wonder between the bars depending on what speed I was...
I have one on my 172 and it noticeably increases the noise, particularly on idle as DannyR says. Personally I like the noise, but I can understand how it would grate on some people. Having said that, the quality of gear change improved vastly & I'd consider it a huge improvement dynamically.
I just apply some fresh Hammerite underbody seal on the jacking areas once it's worn a bit thin. Admittedly it wears off after a while like the original Renault stuff, but until then it'll keep the floor protected.
