10w-40, what does it mean?
We have answered thousands of oil questions in the last 4 years but the most frequently asked one is “What do the numbers mean?”
In short, if you see an expression such as 10W-40, the oil is a multigrade which simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity...

The Opie Oils Team
Hi All,
Thanks for the huge response for our Opie Oils Stickers. This is just a reminder to let you all know what to do once you’ve taken a picture of your car modeling our Opie Oils Sticker.
To get a picture of your pride and joy in our Online Street Gallery all you have to do is...
If what is in there is not known, then 10w-40 semi is fine, no point mixing an expensive oil if what is in there is mineral base.
Next oil change find out whats being used so you can top up with that, or better still provide the oil yourself. 5w-40 would be ideal.
Cheers
Guy.
It's not designed for track cars but for unmodified road cars.
Wrong application.
Take a look at the Silkolene Pro S or Motul 300V here
www.opieoils.co.uk
The quality choice is for a 5w-40 synthetic, most popular from us are the ester based synthetics of the Silkolene Pro S and the Motul 300v, their not cheap but you get what you pay for.
If you dont want to spend that kind of money the are more midrange synthetics that are worth a look such as...
A good Dot4 or Dot5.1 is what you need.
You can get one from Halfords or from my goodself with cliosport discount http://www.opieoils.co.uk
Cheers
Guy.
Yep it will be ok, look to change it around 5-6,000 miles.
If you want to go down the quality route then 5w-40 synthetic changed every 8-10,000 miles.
Cheers
Guy.
The halfords track day 5w-50 is ok but not as good as they make out, its a modified mineral oil not a true synthetic.
A good quality true synthetic 5w-40 is ideal, we recomend ester based oils for track work such as Silkolene Pro S and the Motul 300v, these will give you around 8 track hours...
Hi All,
Just a quick update for you, first we would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who’s sent in a picture of their car modeling our Opieoils logo so far for the new Street Gallery on our Brand New Website (coming soon!!). They’re all looking great!!!
If you have sent me a...
As long as you change the oil every 8-10,000 miles I would look at a good performance synthetic such as the Silkolene Pro S or the Motul 300v.
If you want to stick to VW specs then the VW503.01 spec oil is the one to go for, have a look at the Motul 8100 0w-30.
Cheers
Guy.
Most of the time yes.
They way to tell is for the ACEA specs on the can. So you might see the oil meets ACEA A3/B3 (A is for petrol and B is for diesel) you will find most meet both, the different sticker helps both customer and the manufacturer for market research etc.
Cheers
Guy.
