    Gearoil F.A.Q'S

We are often asked why don’t you do an article on Gear Oils? Well, an article would be very complex but here are the answers to a few FAQ’s that we have had over the years. What does API GL mean? API stands for American Petroleum Industry and GL stands for Gear Lubricant, see below for...

    Basestock categories and descriptions

All oils are comprised of basestocks and additives. Basestocks make up the majority of the finished product and represent between 75-95%. Not all basestocks are derived from petroleum, in fact the better quality ones are synthetics made in laboratories by chemists specifically designed for...

Are 5w and 0w oils too thin?

I read on many forums about 0w and 5w oils being too thin. 0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40 and 15w-40 are all the same thickness (14 centistokes) at 100degC. Centistokes (cst) is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow (viscosity). It is calculated in terms of the time required for a standard...

    172 What Oil ? ? ?

Yes I do peddle my ways, we all have to make a living. You are correct, you can use an average quality 10w-40 semi and all will be fine. But people often want better wether they need it or not, my most frequently asked quest is "what is the best oil for my car" and the best is generally what...

    172 What Oil ? ? ?

Thank god we all have a choice at the end of the day and that's what it boils down to really. Your money, your car. Good oils are insurance and save money in the long term (cat life is one good example) but it's your choice. No marketing hype, just a choice and for modded/tracked car a...

Oil – You get what you pay for!

As it says in the article, the real thing is far more expensive to make. Price is the real difference. There are some good ones mentioned above, not exhaustive but some to be going on with. If your car is standard and used on the road, the real thing is better but not as necessary as...

Its ok, average. It is a hydrocracked mineral oil not a true synthetic so will be easily out performed by a true synthetic. Cheers Guy.

Oil – You get what you pay for!

Niether... it is a hydrocracked mineral oil, in short the better half of a semi synthetic but in the true sense of the word it is not synthetic at all. Cheers Guy.

BUYING OIL, SOME BASIC ADVICE FROM OPIE OILS

Leon, Have a look here http://www.opieoils.co.uk and the look at the likes of Silkolene, Motul and Fuchs, these are all elf quality and above. The best are the ester based oils of Silkolene and Motul. Cheers Guy.

Oil – You get what you pay for!

Costs of synthetics vary considerably. The most expensive are the “Ester” types originally only used in jet engines. These cost 6 to 10 times more than high quality mineral oils. The cheapest synthetics are not really synthetic at all, they are dug out of the ground and not manmade. These...

BUYING OIL, SOME BASIC ADVICE FROM OPIE OILS

A short lesson on Multigrades: If you see an expression such as 10W-40, the oil is a multigrade. This simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity grades, in this case 10W & 40. This is made possible by the inclusion of a polymer, a component which slows down the rate of thinning as...
