To be fair, 40 plus isn't complete rubbish.
I commute in mine and it is a 50 mile round trip (although I have stopped commuting now and catching the train as I don't want to rack up the miles on it) and I get 41mpg that's on A roads also.

Although, they are hit and miss, if it a standard car sometimes you can get away with something like £10 a day, if not temp cover, you could always take out a policy with an insurance company and cancel...

We would probably take the view of the fact that if it gets through an MOT with no problem, then we would allow it.
