The high pitched noise is the power steering pump.. If I'm not wrong. Ask your mate with the engine running and car stationary turn the wheel lock to lock and the pitch of the noise will tell. Hope I'm listening to the right noise but hope this helps...

If a lot of oil has came out passenger side of the box and if you haven't undone the 3 bolts that hold the gaiter in place then there will be no point in trying to get shaft back in as you have ripped the gaiter. :/
