If I had 3.5k to spend on a 1*2 as a second car, I'd be after a very tidy phase 1 that was due it's second belt change for around the 1.5k mark. You can then do a full belt change (including dephaser) at a specialist and you know it has been done right. The belt change will set you back between...
I read somewhere that the CAP figures showed the Duster will hold it's value fairly well. I think the 15k 4x4 version is said to be worth just short of 6k after 4 years.
I think there is a good chance that has not been looked after by an enthusiast Dave. The Halfords wheels, window tints, lack of a splitter and the damage to the bodywork would make me think that car has been neglected. I could be wrong though.
I agree with what you are saying about cars often...
I bought a Cup with 17" TSW alloys fitted, when I swapped to 15" F1's the handling was improved and the car felt much more nimble. 17's generally look too big on a Clio IMO.

If I were looking for a 172/182 I wouldn't be looking for a cheap example, I'd go for something like this one on Pistonheads. It's probably a bit high in terms of price but would be a decent buy for £2k. I'd want to see invoices for the belt change though, any one can scribble in biro in the...
If I were you I'd buy one from the classified section on here, you've got more chance of getting one that has been looked after. That black one you have been to look at appears to have an old Cavalier 2.0 badge on the boot lid, that would put me off straight away!
That certainly is attention to detail, but I do think they look better with out the RS logo. Why don't you seem many sets of 2118's with Speedline centres?
