I know this doesn't help, but surely you know when to change gear from the sound of the engine? You could just listen out for the right time to change and make a beeping sound with your mouth.

Those don't read your registration plate, they just detect how fast your car is moving. Mine is 520x84:

The clips on mine snapped, a new one from Renault was about £7 and took about 5 minutes to fit.

My 520x84 was on my car during my last MOT and it passed, they didn't mention it.
