have you checked the manifold flexis? Although to cause the symptoms you mentioned would imagine it would be pretty broken (which you should notice)

De phaser isn't an issue on the MK3 like the MK2. I take it you weren't aware the belts were due when you bought it ? If you have some receipts for around the 5 year service and it's not obvious what's been do then it may be worth a phone call.
