    I had this same problem timing mine up and found after I'd set it correctly the car pulled alot better low down, and felt better 5k+ rpm onwards, I think advancing the inlet timing will only really help if you shorten the inlet manifold i.e. the RS2 or ITB's

    I needed spring clamps, don't know how the front springs on the Ph1's differ from the ph2's but just be careful is all I'm saying, will do some damage if there's tension on the springs when you take the top mount off. Also don't forget you need to get it tracked up once the springs have settled.

    There's a number of things this could be, but if its not even firing it sounds like an immobiliser possibly, it maybe an issue with your ignition key, have you tried your spare if you have one? Is it even trying to start i.e. spluttering etc. when its failing to start? could be your idle...
