The fuel gauge does have a mind of its own, I was on the red line yesterday with no fuel light, so put it £5 to keep me going did about a mile then the fuel light came on!?!
i had the same problem with leaking recently, turned out to be the drainage pipes in the bulkhead where blocked, take off the scuttle panel clear out the drainage pipes (1 on each side) and the center pipe (Behind the engine) and that should sort it
