The engine management light being on could mean one of a number of things. There is zero point in reading about other peoples symptoms until you get your car plugged in and get the fault codes read. This will tell you exactly what has caused the light to come on.
There isn't an exhaust gas monitor light?
You are probably thinking of the engine management light that tells you of all sorts of problems with the car.

Only way to find out really is to plug a code reader in and see if it works. You can buy cheap ones on eBay for £20 that will do very basic OBDII code reading.
