the throw of the stick with the scenic set-up is the same as standard so you won't rush the syncro's any more than a clio set-up,
it wouldn't take much to knock up a piece of stainless tube as the lift reverse over the stick if you like shiny things.

you can either use a fuel(diesel) burning heater as fitted to a lot of later Rovers/Land Rovers called thermo z tops
or the electric element type that you plug into the mains much simpler and cheaper to fit in the heater pipes, this are mostly fitted to stationery engine...

If the back axle has been lowered in the last few years it shouldn't be easy enough to put back to standard,

If the exhaust gasses can't escape the back pressure in the manifold will hold the carbon dioxide rich air in the cylinder, which in effect stops the fuel that's being injected into the cylinder completing full combustion due to lack of oxygen.
Sounds like cat has collapsed due to it running very rich and saturating the cat with unburnt fuel which has partially blocked the exhaust,
fit a decat if you have one handy (if not knock the old crap out ghetto decat style), clear the fault codes and the only one that should return is catalyst...
