I think the Mk2's (it was defo the case for the Mk1) HAD to be unlocked by the key fob, or the immobiliser wouldn't disarm. if the reciever for the immobiliser is in the roof, i would guess the leak has knackered the board and will need replacling.
just a 17mm (?) socket and a big screwdrive normally does the trick. the bolts that hold the pulleys are on oval bolt holes - one will be in the top of the engine bay, the other you'll have to get at from under the car.
