I wouldn't have thought you'd see any improvement. I ran my 1.2 without a filter for a while and saw no improvement.

I don't really like the sound of "removable harness bar". I'd like to think it would be solid since I'm entrusting my life to it. Edit: also, you can get a full bolt-in cage for not a lot more than that. Worth considering.

How's the battery condition?

You only need a socket set (around £80 from Halfords for a decent one) and Spring compressors (£20 off ebay). Once you've got the tools you'll be able to do loads of other simple jobs and save yourself a stash.

If it's grey/dark smoke and you particular notice it when you put your toe down, I'd be very inclined to say EGR valve. Should be a relatively easy job to do yourself, if it's accessible.
