Having said that if I was driving on tracks, round race circuts I would prefer to go without ABS...

Just remove the old steering wheel completly not just the airbag..
The most important thing to do is disconnect the battery and leave it for a few hours for the airbags to discharge (so it doesnt blow up in your face as your working on it, could kill you really)
