The key doesnt need the battery in it to start the car. THe battery is only for the remote locking.
it could be that the transponder chip in the key is faulty or even the ring around the ignition barrel that picks up the signal from the key.

the blinking one is the overheating warning light iirc, the one to the right of that is the electric fault light.
Perhaps the two combined mean the coolant temp sensor has gone. Not too sure though but it's an educated guess.
yeah, but after all the others are removed, you can prise the arch out of the bumper side a little and get to the nut. Its about half way up and a "lip" holds it.
Have a look at the little black "nipple" thats visable by the seal when the doors open. The door should close onto it when shut, turning the light off.
