I would think 182 might in some respects be safer as the car would give you more feedback than a dynamic model etc.
But insuracne would be a bit of a killer if your young. And you have to learn to drive it safly ie track days maybe to know how to push it safly near big run offs areas etc
Havnt most of the probelems been due to moding the car if you stop modding there would be less problem wouldnt there?
I dont think there many other cars which will give you the drivers satisfaction of the valver. Also modifying cars never has never realy been efficient.

Dropping a 172 engine is is a big job.
If you want a 172 engine in there you might as well look for a crashed 172 and swop the bits over ie dash and everthing forward of the dash.
A 1.4 or 1.6 16V from a Mk2 2 (triangular lights Clio) would be the easist conversion.

Dont superglue it down its supposed to come up when you need to replace gearbox center concel surround (ie the bit its attached to).
