Sounds like a faulty sensor. The enigne hotter when its cold to help reduce emisions and get to max economy quickly. Sunds like a sensor has gone faulty or the ecu needs relading with new software. EDD

Id check the readings against the petrol pumps. May be a faulty sensor. 38 to 41mpg blimey I drive to hard I get only 10mpg more ouf of a diesel on the long run. The mpg counter is very accurate according to my figues and is on mine about 0.5% over reading. EDD

Service at 18k seems to cost between £99 and £150 depending on where you are. REing round a few dealerships to see if you can get it cheaper its worth drivign an extar few miles to get a cheaper service. EDD
