The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Engine and gearbox finally reunited as the final push begins. Bit tight for space in my workshop! Remembered at the last minute to line up these marks from when the bottom end was ballanced. Next step is the big one. Engine into the car and then a heap of wiring and plumbing to do.

Ha Ha! I had another Clio that I sold last year that was 850kg. But the inside looked like this! But I'm also looking at doing a Carbon Fibre roof on the new one.

Thanks. Yes, at the moment still a standard loom. Stripped out in places and the engine loom has been re wrapped and labelled. I have a new body shell waiting in the wings to be built up which will be significantly lighter and will then have a custom loom made up as part of that build. Just need...

Ha Ha, thanks! I painted the engine bay myself and most of the smaller components and brackets I did myself. Engine parts and subframes etc were sandblasted and powdercoated by a company near me.

Let us know! Engine bay ready to receive engine now. With the tight space I have to work in, a bit of organising is required to get the engine off the stand and onto the hoist ready to mate with the gearbox and drop in. Should be fun!

I would have thought all the self centering comes from the alignment not the rack. Camber will also have an influence on this. Unless the EPAS does it's own self centering through the torque sensor. I've had a DCi rack with no EPAS and that always self centred.

Filled the rack slowly (it was already pretty full) until fluid was showing in both openings and then worked the rack one way and then the other several times and tipping it slightly to allow the air to work through and exit out of the holes. Did this a few times, topping it up as I went until...

That's interesting. My concern with the DCi rack is that it only mounts on 2 bolts and doesn't look all that strong. That's why I've made up some reinforcement plates for the bracket on the passenger side. I still imagine it could flex under load on the track though. I'd like to try both on...

Are you using the same rack or the 1.5DCI rack? I've got both to try and I'm interested to know how they'll both feel.

EPAS instal is taking shape and also tidying up a bit of wiring under the dash this week. Hopefully have the column and rack back in the car by the end of the weekend. A busbar for all ancillaries powered up with ignition 2nd position. New 4pin plug for connection to the torque sensor on...

With a trolley jack under the engine, undo the top engine mount and you should be able to lower the engine just enough to get clearance.

Bad luck mate. It's such an anti climax when things like this happen. Hope you get it sorted soon.

I'll sell them once I'm happy with the EPAS. If you look carefully you'll see that I've had Pirtek make a flexi hose to replace the High pressure pipes to the pump. They always seem to leak around the pressure sensor.

Thanks, I had already bought it before I learnt that. and as I already had bought the 4pk belt I decided to run it for now. I'll probably remove it later.

Started EPAS conversion today. I was surprised by the weight difference between the Epas column compared to the standard one so as I've been working to gradually shave weight during the rebuild I brought the scales out to compare the total weight difference of the 2 systems. Standard column...

Small diversion from mechanicals today. Before fixing the new internal brake hoses I wanted to tidy up and respray the interior behind the seats. While I was at it I took the opportunity to lighten the bootlid a bit. After this and removing a few redundant brackets in the back of the car I've...

Difficult to see here but I think 2 degrees negative camber will allow the wheels to clear the arches, even with the additional 10mm spacing each side. If not I can add another shim and roll the arches a bit more. Won't know for sure until it's back on the ground.

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

A quick update before Christmas.. Just brake lines to complete and steering column to fit and finally everything can start going back in the car. (Doesn't sound like much when I say it like that!) Bushes and new bolts arrived from KAM so rear beam is now back together. So much easier to install...

    Hsustyle's Titanium Ph1 project

Oh really? I assumed they all would have been. (I'm not a phase 1 expert!).... (or a phase 2 come to that!)

How much weight do you save with CF bonnet on a PH1? The standard bonnets were Aluminium anyway weren't they? I guess you'll avoid the notorious dents on the nose though.

RB PH1 172 Rally Car Progress

It's a pity Torques weren't helpful. Their product has always been excellent and delivery always really quick. I think the trouble with a lot of EBay traders now is that they are literally just box shifters and have no interest in getting any more involved than that. Good luck with it though, I...

If you can do it yourself it's not an expensive repair. Just very time consuming.

    Track / Race 172

I feel your pain! That's one of the most PITA repairs to do. Even more work than when I rolled at Donington and had to replace the roof! If it happened again I'd seriously consider re-shelling I think.

Something a Bit Special For The Weekend?

Very nice. Obviously I don't know your plans, but Mark Fish ran a team in the naughties when the V6s were a support race for the F1. If you need any help with it he's your man! And not too far away from you either. I look forward to following this.
