I think the point is; if you force the change and damage the syncro you are going to have future problems changing gear.
Anyway, what more do you want. He thought there was a problem, he took it to a garage which fixed the symptoms.
The symptoms reoccured, the garage looked at it and said...
It's something to do, plus the torsion bars on the Mk1 are a PITA for the handling really for anything rough. Alistair Hutchinson who is on here occasionally has a Mk2 and leaves me for dust so it cant be that bad!

When you buy a cheap MIG make sure you get one rated high enough to weld whatever it is you think will be welding most of the time.
