When feeding the 12v to the amp, can you just take a feed off the supply to the stereo or from the light in the boot??

I noticed today that the trip computer on my cup was saying i could do 280 miles before filling up, ive already done about 70 miles, this seems to match up with the miles per gallon reading im getting, but .. . the fuel gauge shows that ive used about a third of a tank!!?? does anyone elses...
